After Twenty Years

見回りの警察官は、堂々とした足取りで通りを進んだ。見ている人はほとんどいなかった。だから、その堂々とした様子は見せかけではなく、いつも通りのものだった。

The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. The impressiveness was habitual and not for show, for spectators were few.

時刻は夜の十時を少し回ったところだった。しかし、雨の気配を含んだ冷たい突風のせいで、通りにはほとんど人がいなかった。

The time was barely 10 o’clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well nigh de-peopled the streets.

警察官は歩きながらドアを確かめ、巧みに警棒を回した。時折振り返っては、静かな通りを用心深く見渡した。たくましい体つきと少し気取った歩き方は、平和を守る者の見事な姿だった。

Trying doors as he went, twirling his club with many intricate and artful movements, turning now and then to cast his watchful eye adown the pacific thoroughfare, the officer, with his stalwart form and slight swagger, made a fine picture of a guardian of the peace.

この一帯は、夜が早い場所だった。葉巻の店や夜通し営業する食堂の明かりが、たまに見える程度だった。大半のドアは、とっくに閉まった店のものだった。

The vicinity was one that kept early hours. Now and then you might see the lights of a cigar store or of an all-night lunch counter; but the majority of the doors belonged to business places that had long since been closed.

ある区画の真ん中あたりで、警察官は急に足を緩めた。暗い金物屋の入り口で、火のついていない葉巻をくわえた男が寄りかかっていた。警察官が近づくと、その男は素早く口を開いた。

When about midway of a certain block the policeman suddenly slowed his walk. In the doorway of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.

「大丈夫ですよ、お巡りさん」男は安心させるように言った。「ただ友達を待っているだけです。二十年前にした約束なんですよ。ちょっとおかしな話に聞こえるでしょう。怪しい者じゃないと確かめたいなら、説明しますよ。

“It’s all right, officer,” he said, reassuringly. “I’m just waiting for a friend. It’s an appointment made twenty years ago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn’t it? Well, I’ll explain if you’d like to make certain it’s all straight.

その昔、この店がある場所にはレストランがありました。『ビッグ・ジョー』・ブラディの店です」

About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands—‘Big Joe’ Brady’s restaurant.”

「五年前まであったな」警察官は言った。「その時に取り壊されたんだ」

“Until five years ago,” said the policeman. “It was torn down then.”

入り口の男はマッチをすり、葉巻に火をつけた。明かりに照らされたのは、鋭い目と角ばったあごを持つ青白い顔だった。右の眉の近くには小さな白い傷があった。ネクタイピンには、変わった留め方の大きなダイヤがついていた。

The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, square-jawed face with keen eyes, and a little white scar near his right eyebrow. His scarfpin was a large diamond, oddly set.

「二十年前の今夜のことです」男は言った。「俺はここで、一番の親友で世界一の男、ジミー・ウェルズと食事をしました。『ビッグ・ジョー』・ブラディの店でね。あいつと俺は、このニューヨークでまるで兄弟のように一緒に育ちました。

“Twenty years ago to-night,” said the man, “I dined here at ‘Big Joe’ Brady’s with Jimmy Wells, my best chum, and the finest chap in the world. He and I were raised here in New York, just like two brothers, together.

俺は十八歳で、ジミーは二十歳でした。次の朝、俺は一山当てるために西部へ旅立つことになっていました。ジミーをニューヨークから連れ出すのは無理でしたよ。あいつは、ここが地上で唯一の場所だと思っていましたから。

I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. You couldn’t have dragged Jimmy out of New York; he thought it was the only place on earth.

それで、あの夜、俺たちは約束したんです。どんな境遇になっていようと、どれほど遠くから来ることになろうと、きっかり二十年後の同じ日、同じ時間にここで再会しようとね。

Well, we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from that date and time, no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come.

二十年もあれば、お互いに運命が決まり、どんな形であれ財産も築けているはずだと考えたんです」

We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.”
