Ben is zes jaar oud. Vandaag is hij jarig. Oma is er. Ze heeft een cadeau voor Ben. Het cadeau is lang en dun. Wat is dat?
Ben is six years old. Today is his birthday. Grandma is here. She has a present for Ben. The present is long and thin. What is it?
Ben maakt het papier open. Het is een paraplu! De paraplu is geel, met groene kikkers.
Ben opens the paper. It’s an umbrella! The umbrella is yellow, with green frogs.
Ben opent de paraplu. Hij is groot en rond, zoals een gele zon. “Dank je, oma! Ik ga meteen naar buiten!”
Ben opens the umbrella. It is big and round, like a yellow sun. “Thank you, Grandma! I’m going outside right now!”
Maar buiten schijnt de zon. De lucht is blauw. Geen regen. Geen wolk. Niets.
But outside the sun is shining. The sky is blue. No rain. Not one cloud. Nothing.
“Morgen regent het vast”, zegt mama.
“It’s sure to rain tomorrow,” says Mum.
Maar op maandag schijnt de zon. Op dinsdag schijnt de zon. Op woensdag schijnt de zon ook. Alle mensen zijn blij. Alleen Ben is niet blij.
But on Monday the sun shines. On Tuesday the sun shines. On Wednesday the sun shines too. Everybody is happy. Only Ben is not happy.
Elke ochtend kijkt Ben uit het raam. “Waar is de regen?” Elke ochtend neemt hij de paraplu mee naar school.
Every morning Ben looks out of the window. “Where is the rain?” Every morning he takes the umbrella with him to school.
De andere kinderen lachen. “Ben, de zon schijnt!” “Ik weet het”, zegt Ben. “Maar de regen komt. Zeker weten.”
The other children laugh. “Ben, the sun is shining!” “I know,” says Ben. “But the rain is coming. I’m sure.”
Op donderdag kijkt Ben naar het weer op televisie. De man op televisie lacht. “Morgen: zon, zon, zon!” Ben zet de televisie uit.
On Thursday Ben watches the weather on TV. The man on TV is smiling. “Tomorrow: sun, sun, sun!” Ben turns off the TV.
