The House That Listens

In March 2050 we moved into the new house. Tom, my daughter Mia and I. The house stands on the edge of Freiburg, between a forest and a small river.

Im März 2050 sind wir in das neue Haus gezogen. Tom, meine Tochter Mia und ich. Das Haus steht am Rand von Freiburg, zwischen einem Wald und einem kleinen Fluss.

It isn’t a normal house. It has a computer, and the computer can talk. It’s called Otto. Otto turns the lights on and off. He makes coffee and opens the doors.

Es ist kein normales Haus. Es hat einen Computer, und der Computer kann sprechen. Er heißt Otto. Otto macht das Licht an und aus. Er kocht Kaffee und öffnet die Türen.

On the first evening Mia stood in the kitchen and asked loudly, “Otto, are you a robot?”

Am ersten Abend hat Mia in der Küche gestanden und laut gefragt: „Otto, bist du ein Roboter?“

“No,” Otto answered. His voice was calm and friendly. “I am the house. I listen and I help.”

„Nein“, hat Otto geantwortet. Seine Stimme war ruhig und freundlich. „Ich bin das Haus. Ich höre zu und ich helfe.“

Mia laughed. Tom shook his head. “A house that listens,” he said. “That’s a bit strange.”

Mia hat gelacht. Tom hat den Kopf geschüttelt. „Ein Haus, das zuhört“, hat er gesagt. „Das ist ein bisschen komisch.“

The house was very cheap. The old owner, Mrs Winter, died in the winter. She lived here alone, for thirty years. The estate agent didn’t tell us much about her.

Das Haus war sehr billig. Die alte Besitzerin, Frau Winter, ist im Winter gestorben. Sie hat allein hier gewohnt, dreißig Jahre lang. Der Makler hat nicht viel über sie erzählt.
