In March 2050 we moved into the new house. Tom, my daughter Mia and I. The house stands on the edge of Freiburg, between a forest and a small river.

It isn’t a normal house. It has a computer, and the computer can talk. It’s called Otto. Otto turns the lights on and off. He makes coffee and opens the doors.

On the first evening Mia stood in the kitchen and asked loudly, “Otto, are you a robot?”

« Non », a répondu Otto. Sa voix était calme et gentille. « Je suis la maison. J’écoute et j’aide. »

“No,” Otto answered. His voice was calm and friendly. “I am the house. I listen and I help.”

Mia a ri. Tom a secoué la tête. « Une maison qui écoute », a-t-il dit. « C’est un peu bizarre. »

Mia laughed. Tom shook his head. “A house that listens,” he said. “That’s a bit strange.”

The house was very cheap. The old owner, Mrs Winter, died in the winter. She lived here alone, for thirty years. The estate agent didn’t tell us much about her.
