耳をすます家

2050年3月、私たちは新しい家に引っ越しました。トムと娘のミア、そして私です。家はフライブルクの端、森と小さな川の間にあります。

In March 2050 we moved into the new house. Tom, my daughter Mia and I. The house stands on the edge of Freiburg, between a forest and a small river.

それは普通の家ではありません。コンピュータがあり、コンピュータは話すことができます。名前はオットーです。オットーは電気をつけたり消したりします。コーヒーを入れ、ドアを開けます。

It isn’t a normal house. It has a computer, and the computer can talk. It’s called Otto. Otto turns the lights on and off. He makes coffee and opens the doors.

最初の夜、ミアは台所に立ち、大きな声で聞きました。「オットー、あなたはロボットなの？」

On the first evening Mia stood in the kitchen and asked loudly, “Otto, are you a robot?”

「いいえ」とオットーは答えました。声はおだやかで親切でした。「私は家です。耳をすまし、助けるのです。」

“No,” Otto answered. His voice was calm and friendly. “I am the house. I listen and I help.”

ミアは笑いました。トムは首をふりました。「耳をすます家か」とトムは言いました。「少し変だな。」

Mia laughed. Tom shook his head. “A house that listens,” he said. “That’s a bit strange.”

その家はとても安かったです。前の持ち主のヴィンター夫人は冬になくなりました。彼女はここで30年間、一人で住んでいました。不動産屋は彼女についてあまり語りませんでした。

The house was very cheap. The old owner, Mrs Winter, died in the winter. She lived here alone, for thirty years. The estate agent didn’t tell us much about her.
