귀를 기울이는 집

2050년 3월에 우리는 새집으로 이사했다. 톰, 내 딸 미아, 그리고 나. 그 집은 프라이부르크 외곽, 숲과 작은 강 사이에 있다.

In March 2050 we moved into the new house. Tom, my daughter Mia and I. The house stands on the edge of Freiburg, between a forest and a small river.

그것은 평범한 집이 아니다. 컴퓨터가 있는데, 그 컴퓨터는 말을 할 수 있다. 이름은 오토다. 오토는 불을 켜고 끈다. 커피를 끓이고 문을 열어준다.

It isn’t a normal house. It has a computer, and the computer can talk. It’s called Otto. Otto turns the lights on and off. He makes coffee and opens the doors.

첫날 저녁에 미아가 부엌에 서서 크게 물었다. “오토, 너 로봇이니?”

On the first evening Mia stood in the kitchen and asked loudly, “Otto, are you a robot?”

“아니.” 오토가 대답했다. 목소리는 차분하고 친절했다. “나는 집이야. 나는 귀를 기울이고 도와줘.”

“No,” Otto answered. His voice was calm and friendly. “I am the house. I listen and I help.”

미아가 웃었다. 톰은 고개를 저었다. “귀를 기울이는 집이라니.” 그가 말했다. “조금 이상하네.”

Mia laughed. Tom shook his head. “A house that listens,” he said. “That’s a bit strange.”

그 집은 아주 쌌다. 이전 주인인 윈터 부인은 겨울에 세상을 떠났다. 윈터 부인은 30년 동안 이곳에서 혼자 살았다. 부동산 중개인은 윈터 부인에 대해 별로 이야기하지 않았다.

The house was very cheap. The old owner, Mrs Winter, died in the winter. She lived here alone, for thirty years. The estate agent didn’t tell us much about her.
