W październiku pojechałem do mojej babci. Mieszka w małej wiosce w Alpach, tuż nad jeziorem. Wieś nazywa się Seewil. Zimą mieszka tam tylko dwieście osób.

In October I went to see my grandmother. She lives in a small village in the Alps, right by a lake. The village is called Seewil. In winter only two hundred people live there.

Moja babcia ma na imię Vreni. Ma siedemdziesiąt lat i przez czterdzieści lat była nauczycielką fizyki. Jest mądra i wierzy tylko w to, co może zobaczyć.

My grandmother’s name is Vreni. She is seventy years old and was a physics teacher for forty years. She is clever, and she only believes what she can see.

Przez telefon powiedziała mi: „Jonas, przyjedź, proszę. Potrzebuję twojej pomocy. I weź ze sobą aparat”. Więcej nie chciała wyjaśnić.

On the phone she told me, “Jonas, please come. I need your help. And bring your camera.” She didn’t want to explain more.

Przyjechałem wieczorem. Ugotowała zupę i zjedliśmy w kuchni. Potem spojrzała na zegarek. „Jest prawie jedenasta” – powiedziała. „Chodź ze mną do okna”.

I arrived in the evening. She had cooked soup, and we ate in the kitchen. Then she looked at the clock. “It’s almost eleven,” she said. “Come with me to the window.”

Na zewnątrz wszystko było ciemne. Jezioro było czarne i spokojne. Wtedy to zobaczyłem. Głęboko pod wodą, na środku jeziora, było światło. Było niebieskie i migało powoli.

Outside everything was dark. The lake was black and calm. Then I saw it. Deep under the water, in the middle of the lake, there was a light. It was blue, and it blinked slowly.

„Od trzech tygodni” – powiedziała moja babcia. „Każdej nocy o jedenastej. A o czwartej rano znowu znika”.

“For three weeks,” my grandmother said. “Every night at eleven. And at four in the morning it’s gone again.”
