Mi chiamo Tim, ho ventotto anni e lavoro a casa. Faccio siti web per piccole aziende. Il mio appartamento è al piano terra, proprio vicino al portone d’ingresso. Per questo sono l’uomo dei pacchi del palazzo.

My name is Tim, I’m twenty-eight years old, and I work from home. I make websites for small companies. My flat is on the ground floor, right next to the front door. That’s why I’m the parcel man of the building.

Tutti i corrieri mi conoscono. Quando nessuno è a casa, suonano da me. Io prendo i pacchi per il signor Becker del primo piano, per i due studenti del secondo piano e per la signora Wagner del terzo piano.

All the delivery drivers know me. When nobody is at home, they ring my bell. I take parcels for Mr Becker on the first floor, for the two students on the second floor and for Mrs Wagner on the third floor.

La signora Wagner ha più di ottant’anni e ordina molte cose: libri, tè, lana. Una volta ha ordinato perfino un tagliaerba. Non ha un giardino. Non ho mai chiesto niente.

Mrs Wagner is over eighty, and she orders a lot: books, tea, wool. Once she even ordered a lawnmower. She doesn’t have a garden. I never asked.

Un lunedì di novembre ha suonato alle dieci. Il corriere mi ha dato un pacco piccolo e marrone. «Per Wagner, terzo piano. Non apre.»

One Monday in November the doorbell rang at ten o’clock. The delivery driver gave me a small brown parcel. “For Wagner, third floor. She’s not answering.”

«Nessun problema», ho detto. Ho messo il pacco sulla mia scrivania e ho continuato a lavorare.

“No problem,” I said. I put the parcel on my desk and went on working.
