La bicicletta rossa

Tom ha sei anni. Ha una bicicletta nuova. La bicicletta è rossa. Ha un campanello. Il campanello fa «Din-din».

Tom is six. He has a new bicycle. The bicycle is red. It has a bell. The bell goes “ding-ding”.

Ma Tom ha un problema. Non sa andare in bicicletta. Non ancora.

But Tom has a problem. He can’t ride a bike. Not yet.

Sua sorella Mia ha dieci anni. Mia va veloce. Va senza mani. Va anche con un solo piede.

His sister Mia is ten. Mia rides fast. She rides with no hands. She even rides with just one foot.

«Oggi imparo», dice Tom. «Oggi vado in bicicletta!»

“Today I’m going to learn,” says Tom. “Today I’m going to ride!”

Papà va al parco con Tom. La strada nel parco è lunga e dritta. Papà tiene la bicicletta. Tom è sulla sella.

Dad goes to the park with Tom. The path in the park is long and flat. Dad holds the bicycle. Tom sits on the saddle.

«Via!», dice papà. Tom pedala. Papà corre vicino a Tom. Tiene ferma la bicicletta da dietro.

“Go!” says Dad. Tom pushes the pedals. Dad runs next to Tom. He holds the bicycle tight at the back.

«Papà, non lasciare!» «No, no. La tengo ferma.»

“Dad, don’t let go!” “No, no. I’m holding on.”

Ma papà non è più giovane. Corre e corre. Dopo cinque minuti la sua faccia è rossa. È rossa come la bicicletta.

But Dad isn’t young any more. He runs and runs. After five minutes his face is red. It is as red as the bicycle.

«Pausa!», grida papà. Si siede su una panchina e respira forte.

“Break!” calls Dad. He sits on a bench and breathes loudly.

Tom ci prova da solo. Va per un metro. Poi cade. Bum! Va per due metri. Bum! Ora il ginocchio fa male.

Tom tries on his own. He rides one metre. Then he falls over. Bump! He rides two metres. Bump! Now his knee hurts.

Tom siede sull’erba. È arrabbiato. «La bicicletta è stupida! Non ci riesco!»

Tom sits in the grass. He is angry. “The bike is stupid! I can’t do it!”
