De rode fiets

Tom is zes. Hij heeft een nieuwe fiets. De fiets is rood. Hij heeft een bel. De bel doet “Tring-tring”.

Tom is six. He has a new bicycle. The bicycle is red. It has a bell. The bell goes “ding-ding”.

Maar Tom heeft een probleem. Hij kan niet fietsen. Nog niet.

But Tom has a problem. He can’t ride a bike. Not yet.

Zijn zus Mia is tien. Mia fietst snel. Ze fietst zonder handen. Ze fietst zelfs met maar één voet.

His sister Mia is ten. Mia rides fast. She rides with no hands. She even rides with just one foot.

“Vandaag leer ik het”, zegt Tom. “Vandaag fiets ik!”

“Today I’m going to learn,” says Tom. “Today I’m going to ride!”

Papa gaat met Tom naar het park. Het pad in het park is lang en vlak. Papa houdt de fiets vast. Tom zit op het zadel.

Dad goes to the park with Tom. The path in the park is long and flat. Dad holds the bicycle. Tom sits on the saddle.

“Start!”, zegt Papa. Tom trapt op de pedalen. Papa rent naast Tom. Hij houdt de fiets van achteren vast.

“Go!” says Dad. Tom pushes the pedals. Dad runs next to Tom. He holds the bicycle tight at the back.

“Papa, niet loslaten!” “Nee, nee. Ik houd je vast.”

“Dad, don’t let go!” “No, no. I’m holding on.”

Maar Papa is niet meer jong. Hij rent en rent. Na vijf minuten is zijn gezicht rood. Het is net zo rood als de fiets.

But Dad isn’t young any more. He runs and runs. After five minutes his face is red. It is as red as the bicycle.

“Pauze!”, roept Papa. Hij zit op een bankje en ademt luid.

“Break!” calls Dad. He sits on a bench and breathes loudly.

Tom probeert het alleen. Hij fietst één meter. Dan valt hij om. Boem! Hij fietst twee meter. Boem! Nu doet de knie pijn.

Tom tries on his own. He rides one metre. Then he falls over. Bump! He rides two metres. Bump! Now his knee hurts.

Tom zit in het gras. Hij is boos. “De fiets is stom! Ik kan dit niet!”

Tom sits in the grass. He is angry. “The bike is stupid! I can’t do it!”
