Paul ha sei anni. Ha un dente che dondola. Il dente è davanti, in alto, in mezzo.
Paul is six. He has a wobbly tooth. The tooth is at the front, at the top, in the middle.
Paul muove la lingua. Il dente va in avanti. Paul muove di nuovo la lingua. Il dente va all’indietro. Ma non cade.
Paul wiggles it with his tongue. The tooth moves forward. Paul wiggles it again. The tooth moves back. But it won’t come out.
A scuola Lisa ha un buco. Jonas ha due buchi. E Ali ha anche tre buchi. Solo Paul non ha ancora un buco.
At school Lisa has a gap. Jonas has two gaps. And Ali even has three gaps. Only Paul has no gap yet.
«La fatina dei denti va da Ali», dice Lisa. «Ogni notte. Ali è ricco.»
“The tooth fairy comes to Ali,” says Lisa. “Every night. Ali is rich.”
Anche Paul vuole un buco. E vuole anche la fatina dei denti.
Paul wants a gap too. And he wants the tooth fairy too.
A casa chiede alla mamma. «Mamma, come cade il dente?»
At home he asks Mum. “Mum, how does the tooth come out?”
«Mangia una mela», dice la mamma. «Una mela grande e dura.»
“Eat an apple,” says Mum. “A big, hard apple.”
Paul mangia una mela. Morde forte. Il dente dondola. Ma resta dentro. Paul mangia un’altra mela. E ancora una. Ora Paul ha mal di pancia. Ma il dente è sempre lì.
Paul eats an apple. He bites hard. The tooth wobbles. But it stays in. Paul eats another apple. And another one. Now Paul has a tummy ache. But the tooth is still there.
Poi papà torna a casa. «Ho un piano», dice. Prende un filo. «Leghiamo il filo al dente. E leghiamo il filo alla porta. Poi chiudo la porta. Bum! E il dente cade.»
Then Dad comes home. “I have a plan,” he says. He fetches a piece of string. “We tie the string to the tooth. And we tie the string to the door. Then I shut the door. Bang! And the tooth is out.”
Paul guarda il filo. Guarda la porta. Guarda papà. «No, grazie», dice Paul. Corre veloce nella sua stanza.
Paul looks at the string. He looks at the door. He looks at Dad. “No, thank you,” says Paul. He runs quickly to his room.
