मेरा नाम विक्टर है, मैं ग्यारह साल का हूँ, और मैं अपने माता-पिता और दो बिल्लियों के साथ तीसरी मंज़िल के एक फ़्लैट में रहता हूँ। मेरी माँ का नाम क्रिस्टीना है। मेरे पिता का नाम आंद्रेई है। बिल्लियों के नाम पिक्सेल और मैंगो हैं।

My name is Victor, I’m eleven years old, and I live with my parents and two cats in a flat on the third floor. My mother’s name is Cristina. My father’s name is Andrei. The cats are called Pixel and Mango.

पिक्सेल काली और बहुत मोटी है। मैंगो नारंगी और बहुत बेवकूफ़ है। एक बार मैंगो एक घंटे तक अपनी ही पूंछ से लड़ी। वह हार गई।

Pixel is black and very fat. Mango is orange and very stupid. Once Mango fought with her own tail for an hour. She lost.

मेरी माँ को बिल्लियाँ बहुत पसंद हैं। उनके पास बिल्ली वाली टी-शर्ट, बिल्ली वाला कप और बिल्ली वाले मोज़े हैं। उनका फ़ोन बिल्लियों की तस्वीरों से भरा है। मेरी उनके पास सिर्फ़ चार तस्वीरें हैं।

My mother loves cats. She has a cat T-shirt, a cat mug and cat socks. Her phone is full of cat photos. Of me she has only four photos.

अक्टूबर के एक रविवार को नाश्ते के समय उन्होंने अपना फ़ोन मेज़ पर रख दिया। स्क्रीन पर सफ़ेद पंजों वाला एक छोटा काला बिल्ली का बच्चा था।

One Sunday in October, at breakfast, she put her phone on the table. On the screen was a small black kitten with white paws.

“आंद्रेई,” उन्होंने कहा। “ज़रा देखो। यह तोफ़ू है। तोफ़ू को एक परिवार चाहिए।”

“Andrei,” she said. “Look. This is Tofu. Tofu needs a family.”

मेरे पिता ने फ़ोन की तरफ़ नहीं देखा। उन्होंने अपनी कॉफ़ी पी और धीरे से कप नीचे रख दिया।

My father didn’t look at the phone. He drank his coffee and slowly put the cup down.

“नहीं,” उन्होंने कहा।

“No,” he said.

“तुमने तो उसे अभी देखा भी नहीं है!”

“You haven’t even seen him yet!”

“मुझे उसे देखने की ज़रूरत नहीं है। हमारे पास दो बिल्लियाँ हैं। दो बिल्लियाँ काफ़ी हैं। दो बिल्लियाँ तो ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा हैं। पिक्सेल ने कल मेरा जूता खा लिया।”

“I don’t need to see him. We have two cats. Two cats are enough. Two cats are actually too many. Pixel ate my shoe yesterday.”

“उसने तो बस थोड़ा-सा चबाया था।”

“She only chewed on it a bit.”

“वह मेरी शादी का जूता था, क्रिस्टीना!”

“It was my wedding shoe, Cristina!”
