Mi chiamo Victor, ho undici anni e abito con i miei genitori e due gatti in un appartamento al terzo piano. Mia madre si chiama Cristina. Mio padre si chiama Andrei. I gatti si chiamano Pixel e Mango.

My name is Victor, I’m eleven years old, and I live with my parents and two cats in a flat on the third floor. My mother’s name is Cristina. My father’s name is Andrei. The cats are called Pixel and Mango.

Pixel è nera e molto grassa. Mango è arancione e molto stupida. Una volta Mango ha lottato per un’ora con la sua coda. Ha perso.

Pixel is black and very fat. Mango is orange and very stupid. Once Mango fought with her own tail for an hour. She lost.

Mia madre ama i gatti. Ha una maglietta con i gatti, una tazza con i gatti e calzini con i gatti. Il suo telefono è pieno di foto di gatti. Di me ha solo quattro foto.

My mother loves cats. She has a cat T-shirt, a cat mug and cat socks. Her phone is full of cat photos. Of me she has only four photos.

Una domenica di ottobre ha appoggiato il telefono sul tavolo durante la colazione. Sullo schermo c’era un gattino nero con le zampe bianche.

One Sunday in October, at breakfast, she put her phone on the table. On the screen was a small black kitten with white paws.

«Andrei», ha detto. «Guarda. Questo è Tofu. Tofu ha bisogno di una famiglia».

“Andrei,” she said. “Look. This is Tofu. Tofu needs a family.”

Mio padre non ha guardato il telefono. Ha bevuto il suo caffè e ha posato la tazza lentamente.

My father didn’t look at the phone. He drank his coffee and slowly put the cup down.

«No», ha detto.

“No,” he said.

«Non l’hai ancora visto!»

“You haven’t even seen him yet!”

«Non devo vederlo. Abbiamo due gatti. Due gatti bastano. Due gatti sono persino troppi. Ieri Pixel ha mangiato la mia scarpa».

“I don’t need to see him. We have two cats. Two cats are enough. Two cats are actually too many. Pixel ate my shoe yesterday.”

«L’ha solo masticata un po’».

“She only chewed on it a bit.”

«Era la mia scarpa del matrimonio, Cristina!»

“It was my wedding shoe, Cristina!”
