Mi chiamo Nora Berg. Da otto mesi vivo da sola sulla stazione Ares. La stazione è su Marte, in una valle rossa e vuota.

My name is Nora Berg. For eight months I have lived alone on Ares Station. The station stands on Mars, in a red, empty valley.

Sono una geologa. Ogni giorno raccolgo pietre e le studio. Un piccolo robot mi aiuta. Si chiama Kiko. Può trasportare, misurare e fare foto. Non sa parlare.

I am a geologist. Every day I collect stones and examine them. A small robot helps me. His name is Kiko. He can carry, measure and take photos. He can’t talk.

La stazione non è grande. Ha una cucina, un laboratorio, una piccola camera da letto e una finestra. Dalla finestra vedo montagne rosse e un cielo rosa. La sera il sole è blu. Questo mi sembra ancora strano.

The station isn’t big. It has a kitchen, a lab, a small bedroom and one window. Through the window I see red mountains and a pink sky. In the evening the sun is blue. I still find that strange.

Parlo con la Terra via radio. Ma questa non è una conversazione normale. Un messaggio da Marte alla Terra ci mette circa venti minuti. La risposta ci mette altri venti minuti.

I talk to Earth by radio. But it isn’t a normal conversation. A message from Mars to Earth takes about twenty minutes. The answer takes another twenty minutes.

Quindi scrivo le mie domande la mattina. A mezzogiorno arrivano le risposte. La mia vita qui è così: chiedo, aspetto, leggo.

So I write my questions in the morning. At noon the answers come. That is my life here: I ask, I wait, I read.
