My name is Sara, and I work in an office in the city. Last winter I took the 7:12 train every morning. The journey took forty minutes. I always sat in the third carriage, by the window.

At the second station the same woman got on every day and sat down next to me. She was perhaps seventy. She had short white hair and a green coat.

De vrouw las altijd. Altijd hetzelfde dikke boek.

The woman always read. Always the same thick book. It was wrapped in brown paper, like we used to do at school. I couldn’t see the title.

We spraken nooit met elkaar. Ze zei “Goedemorgen” en ik zei “Goedemorgen”. Dat was alles.

We never spoke to each other. She said “Good morning”, and I said “Good morning”. That was all.
