Sahte Para

The False Coin

Diogenes was born in Sinope, a Greek city on the coast of the Black Sea. His father was a banker: a man who weighed silver and gold for other people, and who was trusted with their money.

Then something went wrong. People told a story that Diogenes and his father had tampered with the coins of the city: they had made the money lighter or mixed it with a cheaper metal. Whether that was true, we do not know. But Diogenes was driven out of Sinope, and he lost everything: his home, his money and his good name.

In those days a person could go to the oracle at Delphi and ask the god for advice. Diogenes asked what he should do with his life. The answer was a riddle: “Deface the currency.” He did not understand it at first. Did the god want him to ruin even more coins?

Yıllar sonra anladı. Tanrı parayı kastetmemişti. İnsanların düşünmeden değer verdiği her şeyi kastetmişti: altını, şöhreti, güzel giysileri, gücü.

Years later he understood. The god had not meant money. He had meant all the things that people value without thinking: gold, fame, fine clothes, power. These were the false coin. And Diogenes made it his life’s work to show how little they were worth.
