Kapının Hikayesi
The Story of the Door
Mr Utterson was a lawyer: he helped people with the law and kept their important papers. He was tall and thin, with a hard, serious face. He almost never smiled, and he did not talk much. But people liked him all the same.
With friends, after a good dinner, his eyes became warm and kind. He never showed this warmth in his words. He showed it in the things he did. He was strict with himself and lived a quiet, simple life. But he was never strict with other people.
When his friends did something wrong, Mr Utterson did not judge them. He tried to help them. “My brother can go to the devil in his own way,” he often said. He meant: I don’t stop him, and I don’t blame him. So he was often the last good friend in the life of a man in trouble. Those men could always visit him, and he treated them the same as before.
His friends were people from his own family or people he knew from long ago. One of them was Mr Richard Enfield, a younger cousin. Enfield was well known in London, a lively man who went to many parties.
Many people wondered about these two men. What did they have in common? What did they talk about? Every Sunday they went for a long walk together. People who met them on these walks said the same thing: “They don’t say a word, and they look bored.” When a friend came along, the two men seemed happy to see somebody new.
But Utterson and Enfield loved their Sunday walks. For both of them, the walk was the best part of the week. They said no to parties for it, and even to work.
One Sunday their walk took them down a side street in a busy part of London. It was a small street, but it did good business in the week. The shops had fresh paint and shining windows, and everything was clean. Even on a quiet Sunday, the street looked bright and happy next to the dark, dirty streets around it.
Near one corner, there was an opening in the line of houses. It was the entrance to a court, a small square space between buildings. Just there stood a strange, dark building. It was two floors high, and it had no windows on the street. There was only a door below, and above it a wall with no windows at all.
The door had no bell and nothing to knock with. Its paint was old and broken, and it was dirty. Poor men without a home sat in front of it and lit their matches on it. Children played on the steps, and schoolboys cut the wood with their knives. For many years nobody came out to send these visitors away or to repair the door.
Enfield ve Utterson sokağın diğer tarafındaydılar. Kapının karşısına geldiklerinde, Enfield bastonunu kaldırdı ve işaret etti.
Enfield and Utterson were on the other side of the street. When they came opposite the door, Enfield lifted his walking stick and pointed.
“O kapıyı hiç fark ettin mi?” diye sordu.
“Did you ever notice that door?” he asked.
“Evet,” dedi Utterson.
“Yes,” said Utterson.
“It always makes me think of a very strange story,” said Enfield.
