Lukas ha nove anni. Vuole un cane. Vuole un cane la mattina, a mezzogiorno e la sera. Vuole un cane ogni giorno.
Lukas is nine years old. He wants a dog. He wants a dog in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. He wants a dog every day.
«Mamma, per favore! Un cane!» «No, Lukas. Un cane è tanto lavoro.»
“Mum, please! A dog!” “No, Lukas. A dog is a lot of work.”
«Papà, per favore! Un cane!» «No, Lukas. Un cane fa rumore. E rompe tutto.»
“Dad, please! A dog!” “No, Lukas. A dog is noisy. And it breaks everything.”
«Ma faccio tutto io!», dice Lukas. «Porto a spasso il cane. Gli do da mangiare. Gioco con lui. Ogni giorno!»
“But I’ll do everything!” says Lukas. “I’ll take the dog for walks. I’ll give it food. I’ll play with it. Every day!”
La mamma guarda il papà. Il papà guarda la mamma. «Uhm», dice la mamma. «Uhm», dice il papà.
Mum looks at Dad. Dad looks at Mum. “Hmm,” says Mum. “Hmm,” says Dad.
Suona il campanello. Il signor Bauer è davanti alla porta. Abita di sotto nella casa. Ha un cane. Il cane si chiama Otto. Otto è piccolo, bianco e molto vivace.
Just then the doorbell rings. Mr Bauer is standing at the door. He lives downstairs in the building. He has a dog. The dog’s name is Otto. Otto is small, white and very wild.
«Ho un problema», dice il signor Bauer. «Domani vado in Italia per una settimana. Ma Otto non può venire. Otto può stare una settimana da voi?»
“I have a problem,” says Mr Bauer. “I’m going to Italy tomorrow, for one week. But Otto can’t come. Can Otto stay with you for a week?”
Lukas fa un salto. «Sì! Sì! Sì!» Il papà ride. «Bene. Una settimana. Questo è un test, Lukas.»
Lukas jumps up. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” Dad laughs. “All right. One week. This is a test, Lukas.”
Lunedì. Arriva Otto. Corre per l’appartamento. Corre in cucina, in bagno e in camera da letto. Salta sul divano. Salta sul letto del papà.
Monday. Otto arrives. He runs through the flat. He runs into the kitchen, into the bathroom and into the bedroom. He jumps onto the sofa. He jumps onto Dad’s bed.
Lukas porta a spasso Otto la mattina. Porta a spasso Otto a mezzogiorno. Porta a spasso Otto la sera. La sera Lukas è molto stanco. Ma è felice.
Lukas takes Otto for a walk in the morning. He takes Otto for a walk at lunchtime. He takes Otto for a walk in the evening. In the evening Lukas is very tired. But he is happy.
Martedì. Piove. Otto non vuole andare sotto la pioggia. Lukas aspetta. Anche Otto aspetta. Poi Otto fa la pipì. In cucina. Lukas pulisce il pavimento.
Tuesday. It is raining. Otto doesn’t want to go out in the rain. Lukas waits. Otto waits too. Then Otto makes a puddle. In the kitchen. Lukas cleans the floor.
Mercoledì. Otto trova le scarpe del papà. Trova le scarpe molto buone. Per il papà non è divertente.
Wednesday. Otto finds Dad’s shoes. He finds the shoes very tasty. Dad does not find that funny.
