Mañana es el cumpleaños de mamá. Emma y Ben tienen un plan. Van a hornear un pastel. ¡Un pastel de chocolate! A mamá le encanta el chocolate.

Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.

Papá ayuda. Pero papá no sabe hornear bien. Él sabe cocinar bien pasta. Y sabe pedir pizza muy bien.

Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.

Mamá no está hoy. Está con la abuela. Eso es bueno, porque el pastel es una sorpresa.

Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.

Emma lee la receta. Ella tiene nueve años y ya sabe leer bien. «Necesitamos harina, azúcar, huevos, mantequilla, leche y chocolate.»

Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”

Ben tiene cinco años. Todavía no sabe leer. Pero sabe batir muy bien. «¡Yo bato!», grita él.

Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.

Papá trae un bol grande. Emma trae la harina. Ben trae los huevos. Un huevo se cae al suelo. ¡Plash!

Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!

«Oh», dice Ben. «El huevo está roto». «No hay problema», dice papá. «Tenemos diez huevos más».

“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”

Emma sigue leyendo. «Ahora azúcar. Trescientos gramos».

Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”

En el armario hay dos latas. Ambas latas son blancas. Ambas tienen una tapa roja. «Papá, ¿qué lata es la del azúcar?», pregunta Ben.

There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.

Papá está hablando por teléfono. Él no mira. «Esa de ahí», dice él.

Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.

Ben toma la lata. Él pone trescientos gramos en el bol. Luego bate. Él bate y bate. Emma añade el chocolate.

Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.

El pastel va al horno. Después de una hora está listo. Es marrón, redondo y grande. La cocina huele de maravilla.

The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
