ママのケーキ

あしたはママのたんじょう日です。エマとベンにはけいかくがありました。ケーキをつくります。チョコレートケーキです！ママはチョコレートが大すきです。

Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.

パパもてつだいました。でも、パパはケーキづくりがにがてです。パスタはじょうずです。ピザのちゅうもんも、とてもじょうずです。

Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.

今日、ママはいえにいませんでした。おばあちゃんのいえにいました。よかったです。ケーキはママにはひみつです。

Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.

エマはレシピを読みました。エマは九さいです。もうじょうずに読みます。「こむぎこ、さとう、たまご、バター、ミルク、チョコレートがいります。」

Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”

ベンは五さいです。まだじを読みません。でも、まぜまぜはじょうずです。「ぼくがまぜまぜします！」とベンは大きいこえで言いました。

Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.

パパは大きいボウルを出しました。エマはこむぎこを出しました。ベンはたまごを出しました。たまごが一つ、ゆかにおちました。ベチャッ！

Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!

「あっ。」とベンは言いました。「たまごがわれました。」「だいじょうぶです。」とパパは言いました。「たまごはまだ十こあります。」

“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”

エマはまたレシピを読みました。「つぎはさとうです。三百グラムです。」

Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”

たなに、かんが二つありました。二つとも白いかんです。二つとも、ふたはあかいです。「パパ、さとうはどっちのかんですか。」とベンは聞きました。

There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.

パパは電話中でした。かんを見ませんでした。「そっちです。」とパパは言いました。

Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.

ベンはそのかんをとりました。三百グラムをボウルに入れました。それから、まぜまぜしました。たくさん、たくさんまぜまぜしました。エマはチョコレートを入れました。

Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.

ケーキはオーブンに入りました。一時間で、できました。ちゃいろです。まるいです。大きいです。だいどころはとてもいいにおいでした。

The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
