엄마의 생일 케이크

내일은 엄마 생일이다. 엠마와 벤은 계획이 있다. 둘은 케이크를 굽는다. 초콜릿 케이크다! 엄마는 초콜릿을 아주 좋아한다.

Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.

아빠가 돕는다. 하지만 아빠는 케이크를 잘 못 굽는다. 아빠는 국수를 잘 만든다. 그리고 피자 주문을 아주 잘한다.

Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.

오늘 엄마는 집에 없다. 엄마는 할머니 집에 있다. 케이크는 깜짝 선물이다. 그래서 딱 좋다.

Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.

엠마가 요리법을 읽는다. 엠마는 아홉 살이고 벌써 글을 잘 읽는다. “밀가루, 설탕, 달걀, 버터, 우유, 초콜릿이 필요해요.”

Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”

벤은 다섯 살이다. 벤은 아직 글을 못 읽는다. 하지만 젓기는 잘한다. “제가 저을래요!” 벤이 외친다.

Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.

아빠가 큰 그릇을 가져온다. 엠마는 밀가루를 가져온다. 벤은 달걀을 가져온다. 달걀 하나가 바닥에 떨어진다. 철퍽!

Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!

“어.” 벤이 말한다. “달걀이 깨졌어요.” “괜찮아.” 아빠가 말한다. “달걀이 아직 열 개 있어.”

“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”

엠마가 계속 읽는다. “이제 설탕이요. 삼백 그램!”

Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”

찬장에 통이 두 개 있다. 두 통은 다 하얗다. 뚜껑도 둘 다 빨갛다. “아빠, 어느 통이 설탕이에요?” 벤이 묻는다.

There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.

아빠는 지금 전화를 한다. 아빠는 통을 안 본다. “저거야.” 아빠가 말한다.

Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.

벤이 통을 집는다. 벤은 삼백 그램을 그릇에 넣는다. 그리고 젓는다. 젓고 또 젓는다. 엠마가 초콜릿을 넣는다.

Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.

케이크가 오븐에 들어간다. 한 시간 뒤에 케이크가 다 된다. 케이크는 갈색이다. 둥글고 크다. 부엌에 좋은 냄새가 가득하다.

The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
