Morgen is mama jarig. Emma en Ben hebben een plan. Ze bakken een taart. Een chocoladetaart! Mama houdt van chocolade.
Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.
Papa helpt. Maar papa kan niet goed bakken. Hij kan goed pasta koken. En hij kan goed pizza bestellen.
Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.
Mama is vandaag niet thuis. Ze is bij oma. Dat is fijn, want de taart is een verrassing.
Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.
Emma leest het recept. Ze is negen en kan al goed lezen. “We hebben bloem, suiker, eieren, boter, melk en chocolade nodig.”
Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”
Ben is vijf. Hij kan nog niet lezen. Maar hij kan goed roeren. “Ik roer!”, roept hij.
Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.
Papa pakt een grote kom. Emma pakt de bloem. Ben pakt de eieren. Eén ei valt op de grond. Klets!
Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!
“Oh”, zegt Ben. “Het ei is kapot.” “Geen probleem”, zegt papa. “We hebben nog tien eieren.”
“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”
Emma leest verder. “Nu suiker. Driehonderd gram.”
Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”
In de kast staan twee bussen. Beide bussen zijn wit. Beide hebben een rode deksel. “Papa, welke bus is de suiker?”, vraagt Ben.
There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.
Papa telefoneert net. Hij kijkt niet. “Die daar”, zegt hij.
Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.
Ben pakt de bus. Hij doet driehonderd gram in de kom. Dan roert hij. Hij roert en roert. Emma doet de chocolade erbij.
Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.
De taart gaat in de oven. Na een uur is hij klaar. Hij is bruin en rond en groot. De keuken ruikt heerlijk.
The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
