Jutro mama ma urodziny. Emma i Ben mają plan. Pieką ciasto. Ciasto czekoladowe! Mama kocha czekoladę.
Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.
Tata pomaga. Ale tata nie umie dobrze piec. Umie dobrze gotować makaron. I umie dobrze zamawiać pizzę.
Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.
Mamy nie ma dzisiaj w domu. Jest u babci. To dobrze, bo ciasto to niespodzianka.
Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.
Emma czyta przepis. Ma dziewięć lat i umie już dobrze czytać. „Potrzebujemy mąki, cukru, jajek, masła, mleka i czekolady”.
Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”
Ben ma pięć lat. Nie umie jeszcze czytać. Ale umie dobrze mieszać. „Ja mieszam!”, woła.
Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.
Tata przynosi dużą miskę. Emma przynosi mąkę. Ben przynosi jajka. Jedno jajko spada na podłogę. Klap!
Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!
„O”, mówi Ben. „Jajko jest zepsute”. „Nie ma problemu”, mówi tata. „Mamy jeszcze dziesięć jajek”.
“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”
Emma czyta dalej. „Teraz cukier. Trzysta gramów”.
Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”
W szafce stoją dwie puszki. Obie puszki są białe. Obie mają czerwoną pokrywkę. „Tato, która puszka to cukier?”, pyta Ben.
There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.
Tata właśnie rozmawia przez telefon. Nie patrzy. „Ta tam”, mówi.
Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.
Ben bierze puszkę. Wsypuje trzysta gramów do miski. Potem miesza. Miesza i miesza. Emma dodaje czekoladę.
Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.
Ciasto trafia do piekarnika. Po godzinie jest gotowe. Jest brązowe, okrągłe i duże. Kuchnia pachnie cudownie.
The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
