Amanhã é o aniversário da mamãe. Emma e Ben têm um plano. Eles fazem um bolo. Um bolo de chocolate! A mamãe ama chocolate.
Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.
O papai ajuda. Mas o papai não sabe fazer bolo muito bem. Ele sabe cozinhar macarrão muito bem. E ele sabe pedir pizza muito bem.
Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.
A mamãe não está aqui hoje. Ela está na casa da vovó. Isso é bom, porque o bolo é uma surpresa.
Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.
Emma lê a receita. Ela tem nove anos e já sabe ler bem. “Nós precisamos de farinha, açúcar, ovos, manteiga, leite e chocolate.”
Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”
Ben tem cinco anos. Ele ainda não sabe ler. Mas ele sabe mexer bem. “Eu mexo!”, ele grita.
Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.
O papai pega uma tigela grande. Emma pega a farinha. Ben pega os ovos. Um ovo cai no chão. Plaft!
Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!
“Oh”, diz Ben. “O ovo está quebrado.” “Sem problema”, diz o papai. “Nós temos mais dez ovos.”
“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”
Emma continua lendo. “Agora açúcar. Trezentos gramas.”
Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”
No armário tem duas latas. As duas latas são brancas. As duas têm uma tampa vermelha. “Papai, qual lata é o açúcar?”, pergunta Ben.
There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.
O papai está falando ao telefone. Ele não olha. “Aquela ali”, ele diz.
Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.
Ben pega a lata. Ele coloca trezentos gramas na tigela. Depois ele mexe. Ele mexe e mexe. Emma coloca o chocolate.
Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.
O bolo vai para o forno. Depois de uma hora ele está pronto. Ele é marrom, redondo e grande. A cozinha tem um cheiro maravilhoso.
The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
