तंबू में एक रात

मेरा नाम मैक्स है और मैं बारह साल का हूँ। मेरा भाई लियो नौ साल का है। पिछली गर्मियों में हम सचमुच के साहसी खोजियों की तरह, बिल्कुल अकेले जंगल में तंबू लगाकर रहना चाहते थे।

My name is Max and I’m twelve years old. My brother Leo is nine. Last summer we really wanted to camp in the forest, all on our own, like real adventurers.

“जंगल में? अकेले? बिल्कुल नहीं,” माँ ने कहा। “लेकिन तुम बगीचे में तंबू लगा सकते हो। एक रात के लिए।”

“In the forest? On your own? No,” Mum said. “But you can camp in the garden. One night.”

बगीचा जंगल नहीं था। लेकिन तंबू तो तंबू होता है। हमने तुरंत हाँ कह दी।

The garden wasn’t the forest. But a tent is a tent. We said yes straight away.

उस हफ़्ते दादी और दादा भी हमारे यहाँ आए हुए थे। दादा लंबे और मोटे हैं और बहुत ज़ोर से हँसते हैं। उनके खून में शुगर बहुत ज़्यादा है, इसलिए डॉक्टर ने उन्हें मिठाइयाँ खाने से मना किया है। दादी उन पर बहुत अच्छी नज़र रखती हैं। दादा को पूरे हफ़्ते सिर्फ़ सेब और गाजर ही मिले। वह खुश नहीं थे।

That week Grandma and Grandpa were staying with us too. Grandpa is big and round and laughs very loudly. His blood sugar is too high, so his doctor has banned him from sweets. Grandma watches him very carefully. All week Grandpa only got apples and carrots. He wasn’t happy.

शनिवार की दोपहर को लियो और मैंने तंबू लगाया। इसमें दो घंटे लगे, और आखिर में वह थोड़ा टेढ़ा बना। हमने उसमें दो स्लीपिंग बैग, दो तकिए और एक टॉर्च रख दी।

On Saturday afternoon Leo and I put up the tent. It took two hours, and in the end it was a little crooked. We put two sleeping bags, two pillows and a torch inside.

और फिर सबसे ज़रूरी चीज़: मिठाइयों से भरा एक बड़ा थैला। दो चॉकलेट बार, चिप्स का एक पैकेट और गमी बेयर का एक पैकेट। तंबू छोटा था, इसलिए हमने थैले को बाहर दरवाज़े के आगे रख दिया।

And then the most important thing: a big bag of sweets. Two bars of chocolate, a bag of crisps and a packet of gummy bears. The tent was small, so we put the bag outside in front of the entrance.

सामान रखते समय दादा हमें देख रहे थे। उन्होंने देर तक थैले को देखा और एक गहरी आह भरी।

Grandpa watched us packing. He looked at the bag for a long time and sighed deeply.
