Dr. Ferguson

Dr Ferguson

On the fourteenth of January, 1862, a big crowd came to the Royal Geographical Society in London. The hall was full. The president, Sir Francis, stood at the front and made a speech. People often stopped him with loud applause.

“England is always first,” he said. “Our explorers go to the farthest places in the world. Now Dr Samuel Ferguson, one of our best sons, is going to do something new.”

„Ja!“, hat die Menge gerufen.

“Yes!” shouted the crowd.

„Dr.

“Dr Ferguson has a plan for Africa. If it works, we will finally know the whole map of that land. If it fails, people will still remember how brave it was.”

“Hurrah for Ferguson!” cried a man at the back. “Hurrah!” cried everybody. Everybody said the name Ferguson, and the hall shook.

Many famous travellers sat in the room. Some of them were old and tired now. They knew ships that sank, fires, wild animals and hungry days. But their hearts beat fast when they listened to Sir Francis.

In England, people do not only clap. They also give money. So the Society voted for a gift for Dr Ferguson. In a few minutes the gift was two thousand five hundred pounds.

“Where is the doctor?” asked a member. “Is he here?”

„Er wartet“, hat Sir Francis gesagt. „Er steht Ihnen zur Verfügung.“

“He is waiting,” said Sir Francis. “He is at your service.”

„Holt ihn herein!“, hat die Menge gerufen. „Wir wollen diesen Mann sehen!“

“Bring him in!” shouted the crowd. “We want to see this man!”

An old admiral with a bad leg was angry. “Maybe this is a joke,” he said. “Maybe there is no Dr Ferguson at all.”

“Then we must invent him,” said another member, and some people laughed.

„Bitten Sie Dr. Ferguson herein“, hat Sir Francis leise gesagt.

“Please ask Dr Ferguson to come in,” said Sir Francis, quietly.
