Nehir

The River

Efes, Küçük Asya kıyısında, Thales’in yaşadığı Miletos’a çok uzak olmayan, zengin bir Yunan kentiydi.

Ephesus was a rich Greek city on the coast of Asia Minor, not far from Miletus, where Thales had lived. It had a great temple to the goddess Artemis, ships in its harbour, and a busy market.

The temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the greatest buildings in the Greek world. Kings sent gifts to it, and crowds came from far away to see it. Heraclitus belonged to the family that looked after it. He stood among all that gold and all those people, and he felt apart from them.

In this city, a little after Thales, there lived a man called Heraclitus. He came from one of the oldest families. He was born to be a priest or a ruler, but he wanted none of it.

Herakleitos, kentin yanından akan nehrin kenarında durup suyu izlemeyi severdi. Bir gün bir arkadaşı ona nehre neden hiç girmediğini sordu. “Girdim,” dedi. “Ama bu aynı nehir değil. Ben de aynı adam değilim.”

Heraclitus liked to stand by the river that ran past the city and watch the water. One day a friend asked him why he never stepped in. “I did,” he said. “But it is not the same river. And I am not the same man.”

Her şey akar.

People thought this was a riddle. It was not. Heraclitus was simply telling the truth. The water in front of you has already gone. You are older than you were a minute ago. Nothing stays. Everything flows.
