フンブとノルブ

ふたりの兄弟

Two Brothers

昔、韓国の村にふたりの兄弟が住んでいました。ノルブが兄で、フンブが弟でした。

Long ago, two brothers lived in a village in Korea. Nolbu was the older brother, and Heungbu was the younger one.

父が死んだとき、大きな家と田んぼとたくさんの動物をのこしました。

When their father died, he left a big house, rice fields and many animals.

ノルブは全部自分のものにしました。「おれが兄だ。これは全部おれのものだ」とノルブは言いました。

Nolbu took everything for himself. “I’m the older son,” he said. “All of this is mine.”

それから弟のほうを見ました。「妻と子どもを連れて出て行け。お前の場所はここにはない」

Then he turned to his brother. “Take your wife and children and go. There’s no place for you here.”

ノルブはお金持ちでしたが、よくばりで不親切でした。フンブはまずしかったですが、心がやさしかったです。

Nolbu was rich, but he was greedy and unkind. Heungbu was poor, but he had a good heart.

フンブは村のはずれに小さな草の小屋を建てました。とても小さくて、夜に足が壁から出ました。雨がふると、屋根から水が入ってきました。

Heungbu built a little straw hut at the edge of the village. It was so small that his feet went through the wall at night. When it rained, water came in through the roof.

フンブと妻はいっしょうけんめい働きました。わらじを作って市場で売りました。でも子どもたちのための食べ物はいつも足りませんでした。

Heungbu and his wife worked hard. They made straw shoes and sold them at the market. But there was never enough food for all their children.

ある冬、家にお米がまったくなくなりました。子どもたちはおなかがすいて泣きました。

One winter there was no rice in the house at all. The children cried with hunger.

「兄さんのところに行ってくるよ。少しお米をくれるかもしれない」とフンブは言いました。

“I’ll go to my brother,” said Heungbu. “Maybe he’ll give us a little rice.”

ノルブの庭には太ったブタや牛やニワトリがいました。犬たちがフンブのほうへ走ってきてほえました。

In Nolbu’s yard there were fat pigs, cows and chickens. The dogs ran at Heungbu and barked.

「兄さん、助けてください。子どもたちが三日も食べていないんです。お米をかしてください。あとで返しますから」とフンブは言いました。

“Brother, please help us,” said Heungbu. “My children haven’t eaten for three days. Can you lend us some rice? I’ll pay you back.”

「お前にやる米はない。あっちへ行け、二度と来るな！」とノルブは言いました。

“I have no rice for you,” said Nolbu. “Go away and don’t come back!”

台所ではノルブの妻がお米をたいていました。フンブは義姉にも少し頼みました。義姉は怒って、ぬれたしゃもじでフンブのほほをたたきました。

In the kitchen, Nolbu’s wife was cooking rice. Heungbu asked her for a little too. She got angry and hit his cheek with her wet rice paddle.
