Het is nacht in het bos. De maan is rond en helder. De vogels slapen. De muizen slapen. De vossen slapen.
It is night in the forest. The moon is round and bright. The birds are asleep. The mice are asleep. The foxes are asleep.
Ook de hazen slapen. Mama Haas slaapt. Papa Haas slaapt. De broertjes en zusjes slapen. Alleen de kleine Hoppel slaapt niet.
The rabbits are asleep too. Mummy Rabbit is asleep. Daddy Rabbit is asleep. The brothers and sisters are asleep. Only little Hoppel isn’t asleep.
Hoppel ligt in bed. Hij doet zijn ogen dicht. Hij doet zijn ogen open. Hij doet zijn ogen weer dicht.
Hoppel lies in bed. He closes his eyes. He opens his eyes. He closes his eyes again.
Dan hoort hij iets. “Krrr. Krrr.”
Then he hears something. “Grrr. Grrr.”
Hoppel doet zijn ogen open. “Wat is dat?”
Hoppel opens his eyes. “What’s that?”
“Krrr. Krrr.”
“Grrr. Grrr.”
Hoppel is een beetje nerveus. Hij staat op en gaat zachtjes het huis uit. Het huis van de hazen is onder een boom.
Hoppel is a little nervous. He gets up and goes quietly out of the house. The rabbits’ house is under a tree.
Boven in de boom zit de uil. Ze heeft grote gele ogen. Uilen slapen niet in de nacht.
Up in the tree sits the owl. She has big yellow eyes. Owls don’t sleep at night.
“Uil, uil! Maak jij ‘Krrr, krrr’?”
“Owl, Owl! Are you going ‘grrr, grrr’?”
“Nee”, zegt de uil. “Ik maak ‘Oehoe, oehoe’. Niet ‘Krrr’.”
“No,” says the owl. “I go ‘hoo-hoo’. Not ‘grrr’.”
“Krrr. Krrr.”
“Grrr. Grrr.”
“Daar! Hoor je dat?”, vraagt Hoppel. De uil hoort niets. “Vraag het aan de kikker”, zegt ze. “De kikker is bij de vijver.”
“There! Can you hear that?” asks Hoppel. The owl hears nothing. “Ask the frog,” she says. “The frog is at the pond.”
