É noite na floresta. A lua é redonda e brilhante. Os pássaros dormem. Os ratos dormem. As raposas dormem.
It is night in the forest. The moon is round and bright. The birds are asleep. The mice are asleep. The foxes are asleep.
Os coelhos também dormem. Mamãe Coelha dorme. Papai Coelho dorme. Os irmãos dormem. Só o pequeno Hoppel não dorme.
The rabbits are asleep too. Mummy Rabbit is asleep. Daddy Rabbit is asleep. The brothers and sisters are asleep. Only little Hoppel isn’t asleep.
Hoppel está na cama. Ele fecha os olhos. Ele abre os olhos. Ele fecha os olhos de novo.
Hoppel lies in bed. He closes his eyes. He opens his eyes. He closes his eyes again.
Então ele ouve algo. “Krrr. Krrr.”
Then he hears something. “Grrr. Grrr.”
Hoppel abre os olhos. “O que é isso?”
Hoppel opens his eyes. “What’s that?”
“Krrr. Krrr.”
“Grrr. Grrr.”
Hoppel está um pouco nervoso. Ele levanta e sai devagar de casa. A casa dos coelhos fica embaixo de uma árvore.
Hoppel is a little nervous. He gets up and goes quietly out of the house. The rabbits’ house is under a tree.
Lá no alto da árvore, a coruja está sentada. Ela tem olhos grandes e amarelos. Corujas não dormem à noite.
Up in the tree sits the owl. She has big yellow eyes. Owls don’t sleep at night.
“Coruja, coruja! Você faz ‘Krrr, krrr’?”
“Owl, Owl! Are you going ‘grrr, grrr’?”
“Não”, diz a coruja. “Eu faço ‘Uhu, uhu’. Não ‘Krrr’.”
“No,” says the owl. “I go ‘hoo-hoo’. Not ‘grrr’.”
“Krrr. Krrr.”
“Grrr. Grrr.”
“Lá! Você ouve isso?”, pergunta Hoppel. A coruja não ouve nada. “Pergunta para o sapo”, diz ela. “O sapo está no lago.”
“There! Can you hear that?” asks Hoppel. The owl hears nothing. “Ask the frog,” she says. “The frog is at the pond.”
