It is morning in the forest. Little Hoppel the rabbit wakes up. It is cold. Very cold. And outside it is completely quiet.
Es ist Morgen im Wald. Der kleine Hase Hoppel wacht auf. Es ist kalt. Sehr kalt. Und draußen ist es ganz still.
Hoppel goes out of the house. Then he stops. His eyes go wide. The forest is white! The tree is white. The hedge is white. Everything is white.
Hoppel geht aus dem Haus. Dann stoppt er. Er macht große Augen. Der Wald ist weiß! Der Baum ist weiß. Die Hecke ist weiß. Alles ist weiß.
Hoppel takes a step. The ground is soft and cold. His paws are wet. “Mummy! Mummy! The forest is broken!”
Hoppel macht einen Schritt. Der Boden ist weich und kalt. Seine Pfoten sind nass. „Mama! Mama! Der Wald ist kaputt!“
Mummy Rabbit comes out of the house. She laughs. “The forest isn’t broken, Hoppel. That’s snow. It’s winter.”
Mama Hase kommt aus dem Haus. Sie lacht. „Der Wald ist nicht kaputt, Hoppel. Das ist Schnee. Es ist Winter.“
Hoppel jumps into the snow. He rolls in the snow. He eats a little snow. Cold! He laughs. Snow is great!
Hoppel springt in den Schnee. Er rollt im Schnee. Er isst ein bisschen Schnee. Kalt! Er lacht. Schnee ist toll!
“I’m going to show my friends the snow!” shouts Hoppel. And off he hops.
„Ich zeige meinen Freunden den Schnee!“, ruft Hoppel. Und er hüpft los.
First he hops to the pond. But the pond is different. The water isn’t water any more. It is hard and smooth. It is ice.
Zuerst hüpft er zum Teich. Aber der Teich ist anders. Das Wasser ist nicht mehr Wasser. Es ist hart und glatt. Es ist Eis.
“Frog, Frog! Where are you? Look, snow!” But no frog comes. No “croak, croak”. Nothing.
„Frosch, Frosch! Wo bist du? Sieh mal, Schnee!“ Aber kein Frosch kommt. Kein „Quak, quak“. Nichts.
Then Hoppel hops to the hedge. Under the hedge there is a round heap of leaves. The heap goes “zzzz, zzzz”.
Dann hüpft Hoppel zur Hecke. Unter der Hecke liegt ein runder Berg aus Blättern. Der Berg macht „Chrrr, chrrr“.
“Hedgehog, Hedgehog! Wake up! Look, snow!” But the hedgehog doesn’t wake up. He keeps on snoring.
„Igel, Igel! Wach auf! Sieh mal, Schnee!“ Aber der Igel wacht nicht auf. Er schnarcht weiter.
Hoppel is sad. He sits alone in the snow. “My friends are gone,” he says quietly. “Or they’re ill.”
Hoppel ist traurig. Er sitzt allein im Schnee. „Meine Freunde sind weg“, sagt er leise. „Oder sie sind krank.“
