Het is ochtend in het bos. Het kleine konijn Hoppel wordt wakker. Het is koud. Heel koud. En buiten is het helemaal stil.
It is morning in the forest. Little Hoppel the rabbit wakes up. It is cold. Very cold. And outside it is completely quiet.
Hoppel gaat het huis uit. Dan stopt hij. Hij zet grote ogen op. Het bos is wit! De boom is wit. De haag is wit. Alles is wit.
Hoppel goes out of the house. Then he stops. His eyes go wide. The forest is white! The tree is white. The hedge is white. Everything is white.
Hoppel zet een stap. De grond is zacht en koud. Zijn pootjes zijn nat. “Mama! Mama! Het bos is kapot!”
Hoppel takes a step. The ground is soft and cold. His paws are wet. “Mummy! Mummy! The forest is broken!”
Mama Konijn komt het huis uit. Ze lacht. “Het bos is niet kapot, Hoppel. Dat is sneeuw. Het is winter.”
Mummy Rabbit comes out of the house. She laughs. “The forest isn’t broken, Hoppel. That’s snow. It’s winter.”
Hoppel springt in de sneeuw. Hij rolt in de sneeuw. Hij eet een beetje sneeuw. Koud! Hij lacht. Sneeuw is geweldig!
Hoppel jumps into the snow. He rolls in the snow. He eats a little snow. Cold! He laughs. Snow is great!
“Ik laat mijn vrienden de sneeuw zien!”, roept Hoppel. En hij hopt weg.
“I’m going to show my friends the snow!” shouts Hoppel. And off he hops.
Eerst hopt hij naar de vijver. Maar de vijver is anders. Het water is geen water meer. Het is hard en glad. Het is ijs.
First he hops to the pond. But the pond is different. The water isn’t water any more. It is hard and smooth. It is ice.
“Kikker, kikker! Waar ben je? Kijk eens, sneeuw!” Maar er komt geen kikker. Geen “Kwak, kwak”. Niets.
“Frog, Frog! Where are you? Look, snow!” But no frog comes. No “croak, croak”. Nothing.
Dan hopt Hoppel naar de haag. Onder de haag ligt een ronde berg van bladeren. De berg maakt “Chrrr, chrrr”.
Then Hoppel hops to the hedge. Under the hedge there is a round heap of leaves. The heap goes “zzzz, zzzz”.
“Egel, egel! Word wakker! Kijk eens, sneeuw!” Maar de egel wordt niet wakker. Hij snurkt verder.
“Hedgehog, Hedgehog! Wake up! Look, snow!” But the hedgehog doesn’t wake up. He keeps on snoring.
Hoppel is verdrietig. Hij zit alleen in de sneeuw. “Mijn vrienden zijn weg”, zegt hij zachtjes. “Of ze zijn ziek.”
Hoppel is sad. He sits alone in the snow. “My friends are gone,” he says quietly. “Or they’re ill.”
