Marta arrived in Lisbon on a hot Saturday in September. She was thirty-one, and she was a nurse from Poland.
Her new job at a big hospital started on Monday. But first she needed a room.
She found an ad on her phone. “Room in a quiet flat. Ten minutes from the hospital. 400 euros a month.”
The flat was on the fourth floor of an old yellow building. There was no lift. Marta climbed the stairs with her heavy bag.
A small old woman opened the door. She had white hair and a black dress.
« Vous êtes l’infirmière ? » a-t-elle demandé. « Je suis Dona Fernanda. Enlevez vos chaussures, s’il vous plaît. »
“You are the nurse?” she asked. “I am Dona Fernanda. Shoes off, please.”
« Bonjour.
“Hello. I’m Marta.” Marta took off her shoes and put them by the door.
Fernanda showed her the flat. It was clean and very quiet. There were old photos on every wall.
Marta a regardé dehors.
The room had a bed, a desk and a big window. Marta looked out. She saw red roofs and the river.
« C’est beau », a-t-elle dit. « Combien coûte la chambre, exactement ? »
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “How much is the room, exactly?”
« Quatre cents euros par mois. L’eau est dans le prix. »
“Four hundred euros a month. Water is in the price.”
« Est-ce que je dois payer pour Internet ? »
“Do I have to pay for the internet?”
“No, you don’t have to pay for it. But it’s slow.”
