Göl

The lake

Benim adım Tom. Otuz bir yaşındayım ve Londra’da yaşıyorum. Ya da Londra’da yaşıyordum. Artık tam bilmiyorum.

My name is Tom. I am thirty-one years old, and I live in London. Or I lived in London. I’m not sure anymore.

Haziran ayında ılık bir akşam. Feribot, İtalya’nın kuzeyindeki Garda Gölü kıyısında küçük bir şehirde duruyor. Su mavi, dağlar yüksek ve hava limon kokuyor.

It is a warm evening in June. The ferry stops at a little town on Lake Garda, in the north of Italy. The water is blue, the mountains are high, and the air smells of lemons.

Daha önce buradaydım. On dört yıl önce bütün bir yazı burada büyükannemin, Nonna Rosa’nın yanında geçirdim. On yedi yaşındaydım.

I was here once before. Fourteen years ago, I spent a whole summer here with my grandmother, Nonna Rosa. I was seventeen.

İki hafta önce Nonna Rosa öldü. Doksan bir yaşındaydı. Ve bana evini bıraktı: Villa Limone, gölün üstünde küçük, eski bir otel.

Two weeks ago, Nonna Rosa died. She was ninety-one. And she left me her house: the Villa Limone, a small old hotel above the lake.

Planım basit. İtalya’da bir hafta. Evrakları imzalıyorum, oteli satıyorum ve eve uçuyorum.

My plan is simple. One week in Italy. I sign the papers, I sell the hotel, and I fly home.

Çok basit. En azından öyle düşünüyorum.

Simple. That’s what I think.

Çantamla tepeye doğru yürüyorum. Yol dar ve dik. Yukarıda yeşil panjurlu sarı bir ev ve kapısında iki büyük limon ağacı duruyor.

I walk up the hill with my bag. The street is narrow and steep. At the top there is a yellow house with green shutters and two big lemon trees by the door.

Kapıda genç bir kadın bekliyor. Kısa kahverengi saçları ve yuvarlak bir gözlüğü var.

A young woman is waiting at the door. She has short brown hair and round glasses.

Elena: Bay Becker? Villa Limone’ye hoş geldiniz. Ben Elena. Burada çalışıyorum. Ben … büyükannenizin müdürüyüm … müdürüydüm.

Elena: Mr Becker? Welcome to the Villa Limone. I’m Elena. I work here. I’m … I was your grandmother’s manager.

Bana büyük, eski bir anahtar veriyor. Parmaklarımız birbirine değiyor. Bir saniye bana bakıyor ve söylemek istediğim şeyi unutuyorum.

She gives me a big old key. Our fingers touch. For a second she looks at me, and I forget what I want to say.

“Tom,” diyorum sonunda. “Lütfen sadece Tom de.”

“Tom,” I say finally. “Please, just call me Tom.”

Elena: Tamam … Tom. İçeri gel. Sana evi göstereyim.

Elena: Okay … Tom. Come in. I’ll show you the house.
