A la mañana siguiente me despierto tarde. El sol ya está alto y huelo a café.
The next morning, I wake up late. The sun is already high, and I can smell coffee.
I go down to the breakfast room. It is a big room with a view of the lake. The three guests sit at a small table and eat their eggs.
And Sophie stands in the middle of the room, with a cup of coffee and a pile of papers.
Mira: he llamado a Marco Ferri.
Sophie: Good morning, darling! I couldn’t sleep, so I started work at six. Look: I called Marco Ferri.
«¿Has llamado a Marco?», digo yo. «Sophie, voy a verle el viernes.»
“You called Marco?” I say. “Sophie, I’m going to meet him on Friday.”
Sophie: Exacto. Y el viernes firmas. Está todo listo. El precio es muy bueno, Tom. Más que bueno.
Sophie: Exactly. And on Friday you sign. It’s all ready. The price is very good, Tom. Better than good.
Sophie es abogada. Cuando tiene un plan, nadie puede pararla. Lo sé. A veces me encanta eso.
Sophie is a lawyer. When she has a plan, nobody can stop her. I know that. I love that, sometimes.
Sophie: And this, darling, is the list of everything in the house. Beds, tables, lamps. We sell it all. Elena, could you please count the towels?
Elena: Por supuesto, señora Clarke.
Elena: Of course, Miss Clarke.
Elena’s voice is polite and cold. She doesn’t look at me once. Yesterday on the terrace, her eyes were warm. Now they are cold and far away.
«No estés tan triste, cariño.
Sophie puts the list into my hand and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t look so sad, darling. In a week, we’re back in London.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Elena leave the room. The door closes very quietly. That is worse than a loud noise.
