Keesokan paginya aku bangun terlambat.
The next morning, I wake up late. The sun is already high, and I can smell coffee.
I go down to the breakfast room. It is a big room with a view of the lake. The three guests sit at a small table and eat their eggs.
And Sophie stands in the middle of the room, with a cup of coffee and a pile of papers.
Sophie: Selamat pagi, Sayang!
Sophie: Good morning, darling! I couldn’t sleep, so I started work at six. Look: I called Marco Ferri.
“Kamu menelepon Marco?” kataku. “Sophie, aku akan bertemu dengannya hari Jumat.”
“You called Marco?” I say. “Sophie, I’m going to meet him on Friday.”
Sophie: Tepat sekali. Dan hari Jumat kamu tanda tangan. Semuanya sudah siap. Harganya sangat bagus, Tom. Lebih dari bagus.
Sophie: Exactly. And on Friday you sign. It’s all ready. The price is very good, Tom. Better than good.
Sophie seorang pengacara. Terkadang aku menyukainya.
Sophie is a lawyer. When she has a plan, nobody can stop her. I know that. I love that, sometimes.
Tempat tidur, meja, lampu. Kita akan menjual semuanya. Elena, bisakah Anda menghitung handuknya?
Sophie: And this, darling, is the list of everything in the house. Beds, tables, lamps. We sell it all. Elena, could you please count the towels?
Elena: Tentu saja, Bu Clarke.
Elena: Of course, Miss Clarke.
Suara Elena sopan dan dingin. Dia tidak menatapku sama sekali. Kemarin di teras matanya hangat. Sekarang matanya dingin dan terasa jauh.
Elena’s voice is polite and cold. She doesn’t look at me once. Yesterday on the terrace, her eyes were warm. Now they are cold and far away.
Sophie puts the list into my hand and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t look so sad, darling. In a week, we’re back in London.”
Dari sudut mataku, aku melihat Elena meninggalkan ruangan. Pintu menutup dengan sangat pelan. Itu lebih buruk daripada bunyi bantingan keras.
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Elena leave the room. The door closes very quietly. That is worse than a loud noise.
