The next morning, I wake up late. The sun is already high, and I can smell coffee.
I go down to the breakfast room. It is a big room with a view of the lake. The three guests sit at a small table and eat their eggs.
And Sophie stands in the middle of the room, with a cup of coffee and a pile of papers.
Sophie: Good morning, darling! I couldn’t sleep, so I started work at six. Look: I called Marco Ferri.
“You called Marco?” I say. “Sophie, I’m going to meet him on Friday.”
Sophie: Exactly. And on Friday you sign. It’s all ready. The price is very good, Tom. Better than good.
Sophie is a lawyer. When she has a plan, nobody can stop her. I know that. I love that, sometimes.
Sophie: And this, darling, is the list of everything in the house. Beds, tables, lamps. We sell it all. Elena, could you please count the towels?
Elena: Of course, Miss Clarke.
Elena’s voice is polite and cold. She doesn’t look at me once. Yesterday on the terrace, her eyes were warm. Now they are cold and far away.
Sophie puts the list into my hand and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t look so sad, darling. In a week, we’re back in London.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Elena leave the room. The door closes very quietly. That is worse than a loud noise.
