Ertesi sabah geç uyanıyorum. Güneş çoktan yükselmiş durumda ve kahve kokusu alıyorum.

The next morning, I wake up late. The sun is already high, and I can smell coffee.

Aşağıya, kahvaltı odasına iniyorum. Burası göl manzaralı büyük bir oda. Üç konuk küçük bir masada oturuyor ve yumurtalarını yiyor.

I go down to the breakfast room. It is a big room with a view of the lake. The three guests sit at a small table and eat their eggs.

Ve Sophie odanın ortasında duruyor, elinde bir fincan kahve ve bir yığın kâğıt var.

And Sophie stands in the middle of the room, with a cup of coffee and a pile of papers.

Sophie: Günaydın tatlım! Uyuyamadım, bu yüzden saat altıda başladım. Bak: Marco Ferri’yi aradım.

Sophie: Good morning, darling! I couldn’t sleep, so I started work at six. Look: I called Marco Ferri.

“Marco’yu mu aradın?” diyorum. “Sophie, onunla cuma günü buluşuyorum.”

“You called Marco?” I say. “Sophie, I’m going to meet him on Friday.”

Sophie: Aynen öyle. Ve cuma günü imzayı atıyorsun. Her şey hazır. Fiyat çok iyi, Tom. İyiden de öte.

Sophie: Exactly. And on Friday you sign. It’s all ready. The price is very good, Tom. Better than good.

Sophie bir avukat. Bir planı varsa onu kimse durduramaz. Bunu biliyorum. Bazen bu huyunu seviyorum.

Sophie is a lawyer. When she has a plan, nobody can stop her. I know that. I love that, sometimes.

Sophie: Ve bu da, tatlım, evdeki her şeyin listesi. Yataklar, masalar, lambalar. Her şeyi satıyoruz. Elena, havluları sayabilir misiniz lütfen?

Sophie: And this, darling, is the list of everything in the house. Beds, tables, lamps. We sell it all. Elena, could you please count the towels?

Elena: Tabii, Bayan Clarke.

Elena: Of course, Miss Clarke.

Elena’nın sesi kibar ve soğuk. Bana bir kez bile bakmıyor. Dün terasta gözleri sıcaktı. Şimdi ise soğuk ve çok uzaklar.

Elena’s voice is polite and cold. She doesn’t look at me once. Yesterday on the terrace, her eyes were warm. Now they are cold and far away.

Sophie listeyi elime tutuşturuyor ve yanağıma bir öpücük konduruyor. “Öyle üzgün bakma tatlım. Bir hafta sonra yine Londra’dayız.”

Sophie puts the list into my hand and gives me a kiss on the cheek. “Don’t look so sad, darling. In a week, we’re back in London.”

Göz ucuyla Elena’nın odadan çıktığını görüyorum. Kapı çok sessizce kapanıyor. Bu, yüksek bir gürültüden daha kötü.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Elena leave the room. The door closes very quietly. That is worse than a loud noise.
