An early visitor

Esa noche no duermo mucho. Las dos cartas de Giulia están sobre mi mesa. Mis cartas. No las abro. Todavía no.

I don’t sleep much that night. Giulia’s two letters lie on my table. My letters. I don’t open them. Not yet.

Por la mañana oigo un coche sobre las piedras delante de la casa. Un coche grande y negro. Luego oigo a Sophie reír en el vestíbulo.

In the morning, I hear a car on the stones in front of the house. A big black car. Then I hear Sophie laugh in the hall.

A su lado hay un hombre alto con un traje azul claro. Tiene unos cuarenta años, el pelo negro y un poco gris a los lados. Tiene una sonrisa muy blanca.

Next to her stands a tall man in a light-blue suit. He is about forty, with black hair and a little grey at the sides. He has a very white smile.

Marco: ¡Tom! Por fin. Marco Ferri. Lo sé, lo sé, dijimos el viernes. Pero estaba en el pueblo y pensé: ¿por qué esperar?

Marco: Tom! Finally. Marco Ferri. I know, I know, we said Friday. But I was in the village, and I thought: why wait?

Me da la mano. Su mano es cálida y fuerte. Un poco demasiado fuerte.

He shakes my hand. His hand is warm and strong. A little too strong.

Sophie: Marco nos quiere invitar a comer, cariño. Al restaurante del muelle. ¿No es bonito?

Sophie: Marco wants to take us to lunch, darling. At the restaurant on the pier. Isn’t that lovely?

Marco: El mejor pescado del lago. Y podemos hablar del negocio. Solo un poco, lo prometo.

Marco: The best fish on the lake. And we can talk about business. Only a little, I promise.

Detrás de la recepción, Elena escribe en su libro grande. No levanta la vista. Pero su bolígrafo ha dejado de escribir.

Behind the reception desk, Elena writes in her big book. She doesn’t look up. But her pen has stopped.
