Marco

Un visiteur en avance

An early visitor

Mes lettres. Je ne les ouvre pas. Pas encore.

I don’t sleep much that night. Giulia’s two letters lie on my table. My letters. I don’t open them. Not yet.

In the morning, I hear a car on the stones in front of the house. A big black car. Then I hear Sophie laugh in the hall.

Next to her stands a tall man in a light-blue suit. He is about forty, with black hair and a little grey at the sides. He has a very white smile.

Marco : Tom ! Enfin. Marco Ferri.

Marco: Tom! Finally. Marco Ferri. I know, I know, we said Friday. But I was in the village, and I thought: why wait?

Il me serre la main. Sa main est chaude et forte. Un peu trop forte.

He shakes my hand. His hand is warm and strong. A little too strong.

Sophie : Marco veut nous inviter à déjeuner, chéri. Au restaurant sur le ponton. N’est-ce pas gentil ?

Sophie: Marco wants to take us to lunch, darling. At the restaurant on the pier. Isn’t that lovely?

Marco : Le meilleur poisson du lac. Et nous pouvons parler de l’affaire. Juste un peu, promis.

Marco: The best fish on the lake. And we can talk about business. Only a little, I promise.

Behind the reception desk, Elena writes in her big book. She doesn’t look up. But her pen has stopped.
