Il nuovo prezzo

The new price

The next morning, two men from the village climb onto the roof. They shake their heads a lot.

Sophie mi trova in giardino.

Sophie finds me in the garden. She is wearing her white blazer again, and she has new papers in her hand.

Sophie: Marco ha fatto una nuova offerta. Due milioni e mezzo. Per via del tetto.

Sophie: Marco has made a new offer. Two and a half million. Because of the roof.

«Due e mezzo? Tre giorni fa erano quattro!»

“Two and a half? Three days ago it was four!”

Sii realista, Tom. Sono ancora molti soldi.

Sophie: Three days ago, the roof was not broken. Be realistic, Tom. It’s still a lot of money.

«Sei stata tutta la notte da lui, Sophie. Di chi sei l’avvocata? Mia o sua?»

“You were with him all night, Sophie. Whose lawyer are you? Mine or his?”

Il suo viso diventa bianco. Per un secondo sembra spaventata. Poi è di nuovo fredda.

Her face goes white. For a second she looks afraid. Then she is cool again.

Sophie: I’m going to pretend you didn’t say that.

Torna dentro casa. I suoi tacchi battono sulle pietre come un orologio.

She walks back into the house. Her heels click on the stones like a clock.
