“Hello, Marco.”

Marco: Eine Stunde, Tom. Ja oder nein? Zweieinhalb Millionen. Du kannst morgen Abend in London sein.

Marco: One hour, Tom. Yes or no? Two and a half million. You can be in London tomorrow evening.

Ich sehe auf den See. Auf die kleinen Lichter der Städte. Auf die Zitronenbäume auf der Terrasse.

I look at the lake. At the little lights of the towns. At the lemon trees on the terrace.

„Nein.“

“No.”

Marco: Nein? Du machst einen großen Fehler. Ich brauche deine Unterschrift nicht, Tom. Es gibt andere Wege. Gute Nacht.

Marco: No? You are making a big mistake. I don’t need your signature, Tom. There are other ways. Good night.

Er beendet das Gespräch. Ich stehe eine Minute da. Meine Hände sind kalt. Dann höre ich etwas hinter mir, in der Halle.

He ends the call. I stand there for a minute. My hands are cold. Then I hear something behind me, in the hall.

Elena sitzt auf der Treppe. Ohne Schuhe. Sie hat alles gehört.

Elena is sitting on the stairs. Without shoes. She heard everything.

Elena: Du hast Nein gesagt.

Elena: You said no.

„Ich habe Nein gesagt.“

“I said no.”

Sie sagt nichts mehr. Aber als sie nach oben geht, lächelt sie, glaube ich.

She doesn’t say anything more. But when she goes upstairs, I think she is smiling.

Am Montagmorgen ist ihre Tür offen. Der braune Koffer liegt auf dem Bett, und Elena hängt ihre Blusen zurück in den Schrank. Eine nach der anderen.

On Monday morning, her door is open. The brown suitcase lies on the bed, and Elena is putting her blouses back in the wardrobe. One by one.

Elena: Sieh mich nicht so an. Ich bleibe nur für das Hotel.

Elena: Don’t look at me like that. I’m only staying for the hotel.

„Natürlich. Nur für das Hotel.“

“Of course. Only for the hotel.”
