Opening the reader…
Dawno, dawno temu żyła sobie urocza mała dziewczynka, którą kochał każdy, kto na nią spojrzał, ale najbardziej kochała ją babcia, i nie było niczego, czego by dziecku nie dała.
Once upon a time there was a dear little girl who was loved by everyone who looked at her, but most of all by her grandmother, and there was nothing that she would not have given to the child.
Pewnego razu podarowała jej mały kapturek z czerwonego aksamitu, który pasował do niej tak dobrze, że dziewczynka nie chciała nosić niczego innego; dlatego zawsze nazywano ją „Czerwonym Kapturkiem”.
Once she gave her a little cap of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called ‘Little Red-Cap.’
Pewnego dnia matka powiedziała do niej: „Chodź, Czerwony Kapturku, oto kawałek ciasta i butelka wina; zanieś je babci, jest chora i słaba, a one dobrze jej zrobią.
One day her mother said to her: ‘Come, Little Red-Cap, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine; take them to your grandmother, she is ill and weak, and they will do her good.
Wyrusz, zanim zrobi się gorąco, a gdy będziesz szła, idź grzecznie i spokojnie, i nie zbaczaj ze ścieżki, bo możesz upaść i stłuc butelkę, a wtedy babcia nic nie dostanie; a kiedy wejdziesz do jej pokoju, nie zapomnij powiedzieć: «Dzień dobry», i nie zaglądaj w każdy kąt, zanim to zrobisz”.
Set out before it gets hot, and when you are going, walk nicely and quietly and do not run off the path, or you may fall and break the bottle, and then your grandmother will get nothing; and when you go into her room, don’t forget to say, “Good morning”, and don’t peep into every corner before you do it.’
„Będę bardzo uważać” — powiedziała matce dziewczynka i podała jej na to rękę.
‘I will take great care,’ said Little Red-Cap to her mother, and gave her hand on it.
Babcia mieszkała w lesie, pół mili od wioski, i gdy tylko Czerwony Kapturek wszedł do lasu, spotkał ją wilk. Kapturek nie wiedziała, jak złym stworzeniem był wilk, i wcale się go nie bała.
The grandmother lived out in the wood, half a league from the village, and just as Little Red-Cap entered the wood, a wolf met her. Red-Cap did not know what a wicked creature he was, and was not at all afraid of him.
„Dzień dobry, Czerwony Kapturku” — rzekł.
‘Good day, Little Red-Cap,’ said he.
„Dziękuję uprzejmie, panie wilku”.
‘Thank you kindly, wolf.’
„Dokąd to tak wcześnie, Czerwony Kapturku?”
‘Whither away so early, Little Red-Cap?’
„Do mojej babci”.
‘To my grandmother’s.’
„A co niesiesz w fartuszku?”
‘What have you got in your apron?’
„Ciasto i wino; wczoraj był dzień pieczenia, więc biedna, chora babcia dostanie coś dobrego, żeby nabrać sił”.
‘Cake and wine; yesterday was baking-day, so poor sick grandmother is to have something good, to make her stronger.’
„Gdzie mieszka twoja babcia, Czerwony Kapturku?”
‘Where does your grandmother live, Little Red-Cap?’
„Dobre ćwierć mili dalej w lesie; jej dom stoi pod trzema wielkimi dębami, a tuż poniżej rosną leszczyny; z pewnością pan go zna” — odpowiedziała dziewczynka.
‘A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood; her house stands under the three large oak-trees, the nut-trees are just below; you surely must know it,’ replied Little Red-Cap.
