नन्हीं लाल टोपी

एक समय की बात है, किसी गाँव में एक नन्हीं ग्रामीण लड़की रहती थी, जो अब तक देखी गई सबसे सुंदर बच्ची थी। उसकी माँ उसे बेहद प्यार करती थी; और उसकी नानी तो उस पर जान छिड़कती थी।

Once upon a time, there lived in a certain village, a little country girl, the prettiest creature was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grand-mother doated on her much more.

इस भली महिला ने उसके लिए एक नन्हीं लाल टोपी बनवाई; जो उस लड़की पर इतनी अच्छी लगी कि हर कोई उसे नन्हीं लाल टोपी कहने लगा।

This good woman got made for her a little red riding-hood; which became the girl so extremely well, that every body called her Little Red Riding-Hood.

एक दिन उसकी माँ ने तवे की रोटियाँ बनाकर उससे कहा:

One day, her mother, having made some girdle-cakes, said to her:

“जाओ, मेरी प्यारी, और देखकर आओ कि तुम्हारी नानी कैसी हैं, क्योंकि मैंने सुना है कि वह बहुत बीमार रही हैं; उनके लिए तवे की यह रोटी और मक्खन की यह छोटी मटकी ले जाओ।”

“Go, my dear, and see how thy grand-mamma does, for I hear she has been very ill, carry her a girdle-cake, and this little pot of butter.”

नन्हीं लाल टोपी तुरंत अपनी नानी के पास जाने के लिए निकल पड़ी, जो दूसरे गाँव में रहती थीं।

Little Red Riding-Hood set out immediately to go to her grand-mother, who lived in another village.

जब वह जंगल से होकर जा रही थी, तो उसकी भेंट बूढ़े भेड़िये से हुई, जिसका उसे खा जाने का बहुत मन था; पर जंगल में पास ही कुछ लकड़हारे काम कर रहे थे, इसलिए उसकी हिम्मत नहीं हुई।

As she was going thro’ the wood, she met with Gaffer Wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he durst not, because of some faggot-makers hard by in the forest.

उसने उससे पूछा कि वह कहाँ जा रही है। बेचारी बच्ची, जो यह नहीं जानती थी कि रुककर किसी भेड़िये की बात सुनना ख़तरनाक होता है, उसने उससे कहा:

He asked her whither she was going. The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and hear a Wolf talk, said to him:

“मैं अपनी नानी को देखने जा रही हूँ, और अपनी माँ की ओर से उनके लिए तवे की एक रोटी और मक्खन की एक छोटी मटकी ले जा रही हूँ।”

“I am going to see my grand-mamma, and carry her a girdle-cake, and a little pot of butter, from my mamma.”

“क्या वह बहुत दूर रहती हैं?” भेड़िये ने पूछा।

“Does she live far off?” said the Wolf.

“अरे! हाँ,” नन्हीं लाल टोपी ने उत्तर दिया, “वह जो चक्की आपको वहाँ दिख रही है, उसके पार, गाँव के सबसे पहले घर में।”

“Oh! ay,” answered Little Red Riding-Hood, “it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village.”

“अच्छा,” भेड़िये ने कहा, “तो मैं भी उनसे मिलने चलूँगा: मैं इस रास्ते से जाता हूँ, और तुम उस रास्ते से जाओ, फिर देखते हैं कि वहाँ सबसे पहले कौन पहुँचता है।”

“Well,” said the Wolf, “and I’ll go and see her too: I’ll go this way, and you go that, and we shall see who will be there soonest.”

भेड़िया सबसे छोटा रास्ता चुनकर जितनी तेज़ी से भाग सकता था, भागने लगा; और वह छोटी लड़की सबसे लंबे रास्ते से गई, अखरोट इकट्ठा करने, तितलियों के पीछे भागने और रास्ते में मिलने वाले छोटे-छोटे फूलों के गुलदस्ते बनाने में मन बहलाती रही।

The Wolf began to run as fast as he could, taking the nearest way; and the little girl went by that farthest about, diverting herself in gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and making nosegays of such little flowers as she met with.

भेड़िये को उस बूढ़ी महिला के घर पहुँचने में ज़्यादा देर नहीं लगी: उसने दरवाज़ा खटखटाया, खट, खट।

The Wolf was not long before he got to the old woman’s house: he knocked at the door, tap, tap.

“वहाँ कौन है?”

“Who’s there?”
