Once upon a time, there lived in a certain village, a little country girl, the prettiest creature was ever seen. Her mother was excessively fond of her; and her grand-mother doated on her much more.
Người bà phúc hậu ấy đã may cho cô một chiếc áo choàng có mũ màu đỏ; chiếc áo hợp với cô bé đến nỗi ai ai cũng gọi cô là Cô bé Quàng khăn đỏ.
This good woman got made for her a little red riding-hood; which became the girl so extremely well, that every body called her Little Red Riding-Hood.
Một hôm, mẹ cô bé nướng xong vài chiếc bánh nướng vỉ liền bảo cô:
One day, her mother, having made some girdle-cakes, said to her:
“Con yêu, hãy đi xem bà dạo này thế nào, mẹ nghe nói bà đang ốm nặng đấy, hãy mang cho bà chiếc bánh nướng vỉ này cùng hũ bơ nhỏ này nhé.”
“Go, my dear, and see how thy grand-mamma does, for I hear she has been very ill, carry her a girdle-cake, and this little pot of butter.”
Cô bé Quàng khăn đỏ lập tức lên đường đến thăm bà ngoại, người đang sống ở một ngôi làng khác.
Little Red Riding-Hood set out immediately to go to her grand-mother, who lived in another village.
Khi đi qua khu rừng, cô bé tình cờ gặp Lão Sói, kẻ rất muốn ăn thịt cô, nhưng hắn không dám vì có mấy người thợ đốn củi đang làm việc ngay gần đó trong rừng.
As she was going thro’ the wood, she met with Gaffer Wolf, who had a very great mind to eat her up, but he durst not, because of some faggot-makers hard by in the forest.
Hắn hỏi cô bé đang đi đâu. Đứa trẻ tội nghiệp không hề hay biết rằng dừng lại nghe một con Sói nói chuyện là điều nguy hiểm, liền bảo hắn:
He asked her whither she was going. The poor child, who did not know that it was dangerous to stay and hear a Wolf talk, said to him:
“Cháu đang đi thăm bà ngoại, mang cho bà một chiếc bánh nướng vỉ và một hũ bơ nhỏ mẹ cháu gửi.”
“I am going to see my grand-mamma, and carry her a girdle-cake, and a little pot of butter, from my mamma.”
“Bà cháu có ở xa không?” con Sói hỏi.
“Does she live far off?” said the Wolf.
“Ồ, có chứ ạ,” Cô bé Quàng khăn đỏ đáp, “nhà bà ở ngay sau chiếc cối xay gió đằng kia kìa, chính là ngôi nhà đầu tiên của làng.”
“Oh! ay,” answered Little Red Riding-Hood, “it is beyond that mill you see there, at the first house in the village.”
“Thế à,” con Sói nói, “ta cũng sẽ đi thăm bà cháu xem sao: ta sẽ đi đường này, còn cháu đi đường kia, để xem ai tới đó trước nhé.”
“Well,” said the Wolf, “and I’ll go and see her too: I’ll go this way, and you go that, and we shall see who will be there soonest.”
Con Sói bắt đầu cắm đầu cắm cổ chạy nhanh hết sức có thể theo con đường ngắn nhất; còn cô bé thì đi theo con đường vòng xa nhất, mải mê nhặt hạt dẻ, đuổi bắt bướm và hái những bông hoa nhỏ gặp ven đường kết thành từng bó.
The Wolf began to run as fast as he could, taking the nearest way; and the little girl went by that farthest about, diverting herself in gathering nuts, running after butterflies, and making nosegays of such little flowers as she met with.
Chẳng mấy chốc con Sói đã tới nhà bà cụ: hắn gõ cửa, cộc, cộc.
The Wolf was not long before he got to the old woman’s house: he knocked at the door, tap, tap.
“Ai ở ngoài đó thế?”
“Who’s there?”
