Brzoskwinia w rzece
The Peach in the River
Dawno, dawno temu w Japonii żyli stary człowiek i stara kobieta. Byli biedni i nie mieli dzieci.
Long, long ago, an old man and an old woman lived in Japan. They were poor, and they had no children.
Pewnego ranka staruszek poszedł na wzgórza ścinać trawę. Staruszka zabrała ubrania nad rzekę.
One morning the old man went to the hills to cut grass. The old woman took the clothes to the river.
Nagle zobaczyła w wodzie coś wielkiego. To była brzoskwinia, największa brzoskwinia na świecie! Płynęła wolno w dół rzeki: stuk, stuk, stuk.
Suddenly she saw something big in the water. It was a peach, the biggest peach in the world! It came down the river slowly, bump, bump, bump.
„Cóż za wspaniała brzoskwinia!” – powiedziała staruszka. – „Zabiorę ją do domu dla męża”.
“What a wonderful peach!” said the old woman. “I’m going to take it home for my husband.”
Próbowała jej dosięgnąć, ale owoc był zbyt daleko. Zaklaszczyła więc w dłonie i zaśpiewała małą piosenkę.
She tried to reach it, but it was too far away. So she clapped her hands and sang a little song.
„Daleka woda jest gorzka, bliska woda jest słodka. Przypłyń do słodkiej wody, mała brzoskwinio!”
“Far water is bitter, near water is sweet. Come to the sweet water, little peach!”
I brzoskwinia płynęła coraz bliżej i bliżej. W końcu zatrzymała się przed nią. Kobieta podniosła ją i pospieszyła do domu.
And the peach came closer and closer. At last it stopped in front of her. She picked it up and hurried home.
Wieczorem staruszek wrócił do domu.
In the evening the old man came home.
„Mężu, chodź szybko!” – zawołała staruszka. – „Mam dla ciebie prezent”.
“Husband, come quickly!” said the old woman. “I have a present for you.”
Pokazała mu brzoskwinię, a jego oczy zrobiły się szerokie ze zdziwienia. „Nigdy nie widziałem takiej brzoskwini!” – powiedział. – „Gdzie ją kupiłaś?”
She showed him the peach, and his eyes grew wide. “I have never seen a peach like this!” he said. “Where did you buy it?”
„Nie kupiłam jej. Znalazłam ją w rzece”.
“I didn’t buy it. I found it in the river.”
„W takim razie zjedzmy ją teraz. Jestem bardzo głodny”.
“Then let’s eat it now. I’m very hungry.”
Staruszek wziął nóż. Zanim jednak zdołał ją przekroić, brzoskwinia otworzyła się sama.
The old man took a knife. But before he could cut it, the peach opened by itself.
