The Quiet Loom

Tanto tempo fa, nel nord della Cina, c’era una ragazza. Il suo nome era Mulan. Ogni giorno si è seduta al suo telaio vicino alla porta. Tutto il giorno il telaio ha fatto il suo rumore continuo: clic, clac, clic, clac.

Long ago in northern China, there was a young girl. Her name was Mulan. Every day she sat at her loom near the door. All day the loom made its busy sound: click, clack, click, clack.

Ma un giorno il telaio è stato silenzioso. Le mani di Mulan non si sono mosse. La sua famiglia ha sentito solo un suono dalla porta. Erano i lunghi e tristi sospiri di Mulan.

But one day the loom was quiet. Mulan’s hands did not move. Her family heard only one sound from the door. It was Mulan’s long, sad sighs.

Sua madre è arrivata e si è seduta accanto a lei. «A che cosa stai pensando, figlia mia?», ha chiesto. «Che cosa c’è nel tuo cuore?»

Her mother came and sat beside her. “What are you thinking about, my daughter?” she asked. “What is in your heart?”

«Non è niente, madre», ha risposto Mulan all’inizio. Poi ha guardato il viso gentile di sua madre e le ha raccontato tutto.

“It’s nothing, Mother,” Mulan answered at first. Then she looked at her mother’s kind face and told her everything.

«Ieri sera ho visto le liste dell’esercito», ha detto. «Il Khan sta chiamando molti uomini per il suo esercito. Ci sono dodici liste, e il nome del padre è su ogni lista.»

“Last night I saw the army lists,” she said. “The Khan is calling a lot of men to his army. There are twelve lists, and Father’s name is on every list.”

Il viso di sua madre è diventato bianco. Il padre di Mulan era vecchio e stanco. Non era abbastanza forte per una lunga guerra al nord.

Her mother’s face went white. Mulan’s father was old and tired. He was not strong enough for a long war in the north.

«Il padre non ha un figlio grande», ha detto Mulan a voce bassa. «E io non ho un fratello maggiore. Quindi qualcuno deve andare al suo posto.»

“Father has no grown-up son,” Mulan said quietly. “And I have no older brother. So someone must go in his place.”

«Ma chi?», ha chiesto sua madre. Mulan si è alzata dal telaio.

“But who?” asked her mother. Mulan stood up from the loom.

«Io», ha detto. «Comprerò un cavallo e una sella. E poi andrò in guerra al posto del padre.»

“Me,” she said. “I’m going to buy a horse and a saddle. And then I’m going to go to war for Father.”
