Sessiz Dokuma Tezgâhı

The Quiet Loom

Çok zaman önce kuzey Çin’de genç bir kız vardı. Adı Mulan’dı. Her gün kapının yanındaki tezgâhında oturdu. Tezgâh bütün gün ses çıkardı: tık, tık, tık, tık.

Long ago in northern China, there was a young girl. Her name was Mulan. Every day she sat at her loom near the door. All day the loom made its busy sound: click, clack, click, clack.

Fakat bir gün tezgâh sessizdi. Mulan’ın elleri hareket etmedi. Ailesi kapıdan sadece tek bir ses duydu. Bu ses Mulan’ın uzun, üzgün iç çekişleriydi.

But one day the loom was quiet. Mulan’s hands did not move. Her family heard only one sound from the door. It was Mulan’s long, sad sighs.

Annesi gelip yanına oturdu. “Ne düşünüyorsun, kızım?” diye sordu. “Yüreğinde ne var?”

Her mother came and sat beside her. “What are you thinking about, my daughter?” she asked. “What is in your heart?”

Mulan ilk önce “Bir şey yok, Anne,” diye cevap verdi. Sonra annesinin nazik yüzüne baktı ve ona her şeyi anlattı.

“It’s nothing, Mother,” Mulan answered at first. Then she looked at her mother’s kind face and told her everything.

“Dün gece ordu listelerini gördüm,” dedi. “Kağan ordusuna birçok adam çağırıyor. On iki liste var ve Babamın adı her listede var.”

“Last night I saw the army lists,” she said. “The Khan is calling a lot of men to his army. There are twelve lists, and Father’s name is on every list.”

Annesinin yüzü beyaz oldu. Mulan’ın babası yaşlı ve yorgundu. Kuzeydeki uzun bir savaş için yeterince güçlü değildi.

Her mother’s face went white. Mulan’s father was old and tired. He was not strong enough for a long war in the north.

Mulan sessizce, “Babamın yetişkin bir oğlu yok,” dedi. “Benim de ağabeyim yok. Bu yüzden onun yerine biri gitmeli.”

“Father has no grown-up son,” Mulan said quietly. “And I have no older brother. So someone must go in his place.”

Annesi, “Fakat kim?” diye sordu. Mulan tezgâhtan ayağa kalktı.

“But who?” asked her mother. Mulan stood up from the loom.

“Ben,” dedi. “Bir at ve eyer satın alacağım. Sonra da Babam için savaşa gideceğim.”

“Me,” she said. “I’m going to buy a horse and a saddle. And then I’m going to go to war for Father.”
