Non per Jonas

«Se fai questa cosa, non serve più che torni a casa». Mio padre ha detto queste parole un martedì di marzo, e poi ha chiuso la porta della cucina così forte che i bicchieri nella credenza hanno tremato.

“If you do this, you needn’t bother coming home.” That’s what my father said, on a Tuesday in March, and then he shut the kitchen door so hard that the glasses rattled in the cupboard.

Mio padre si chiama Rolf Brandt. Ha sessant’anni, guida gli autobus a Kassel da trent’anni e non parla molto. Da quando mia madre è morta due anni fa, parla ancora meno. Viviamo insieme nel piccolo appartamento in cui sono cresciuto, e la sera di solito stiamo seduti davanti alla televisione in silenzio.

My father’s name is Rolf Brandt. He is sixty years old, he has driven a bus in Kassel for thirty years, and he doesn’t say much. Since my mother died two years ago, he says even less. We live together in the small flat where I grew up, and most evenings we sit in front of the TV in silence.

Quel martedì gli ho mostrato la lettera. Mi sono iscritto di nascosto a “La padella d’oro”, un programma di cucina in televisione, e mi hanno preso. Dodici cuochi dilettanti, sei settimane a Colonia, alla fine cinquantamila euro e un posto in una scuola di cucina a Lione.

That Tuesday I showed him the letter. I had secretly applied to “The Golden Pan”, a cooking show on TV, and they had accepted me. Twelve amateur cooks, six weeks in Cologne, and at the end fifty thousand euros and a place at a cooking school in Lyon.

«Hai un buon lavoro nell’assicurazione», ha detto mio padre. «E vuoi andare a pelare patate in televisione?»

“You’ve got a good job at the insurance company,” my father said. “And you want to peel potatoes on TV?”

«Voglio cucinare, papà. Come la mamma».

“I want to cook, Dad. Like Mum.”

A quel punto la sua faccia è diventata grigia, e io non ho capito il perché. Mia madre cucinava per noi tutti i giorni, e tutti amavano i suoi piatti: i vicini, i miei amici, perfino il parroco. Solo mio padre mangiava sempre in silenzio, senza dire una parola, come se il cibo fosse solo benzina per il corpo.

At that, his face went completely grey, and I didn’t understand why. My mother cooked for us every day, and everyone loved her food: the neighbours, my friends, even the priest. Only my father always ate in silence, without a word, as if food were just fuel for the body.

Dopo che ha chiuso la porta, sono andato in camera mia e ho tirato fuori la scatola da sotto il letto. Lì dentro c’è il ricettario di mia madre: un grosso quaderno blu con macchie di unto, pieno di ricette con la sua calligrafia rotonda. L’ho preso dalla cucina dopo il funerale, perché non volevo che mio padre lo buttasse via.

After he shut the door, I went to my room and pulled the box out from under my bed. Inside it lies my mother’s recipe book: a thick blue notebook with grease stains, full of recipes in her round handwriting. I took it from the kitchen after the funeral so that my father wouldn’t throw it away.

L’ho aperto, come facevo spesso. Ma quella sera ho notato una cosa che non avevo mai visto prima. Le ultime dieci pagine sono incollate, con molta cura, lungo i bordi. E sulla prima pagina c’è scritto con l’inchiostro rosso: Non per Jonas. Non ancora.

I opened it, as I so often did. But that evening I noticed something I had never seen before. The last ten pages were glued together, very carefully, along the edges. And on the first of them, in red ink, it said: Not for Jonas. Not yet.
