Pendant dix ans, je ne suis pas retournée chez moi. Et quand je suis enfin descendue du train, mon propre oncle m’a regardée et a tout de suite baissé les yeux vers ses chaussures.

For ten years I didn’t go home. And when I finally got off the train, my own uncle looked at me and immediately stared down at his shoes.

« Lena », a dit oncle Sepp. Rien de plus. Puis il a pris ma valise et est allé vers la voiture.

“Lena,” said Uncle Sepp. Just that. Then he took my suitcase and walked to the car.

La gare de Sankt Anna est petite, avec juste une voie et un banc. Derrière le village, les montagnes se dressent, grises et blanches, exactement comme autrefois. J’ai pensé qu’en dix ans, tout changeait. Mais ici, presque rien n’a changé. Seulement moi.

The station in Sankt Anna is small, just one track and one bench. Behind the village stand the mountains, grey and white, exactly as before. I had thought that everything changes in ten years. But almost nothing had changed here. Except me.

Ma sœur Katrin se marie samedi. Il y a trois mois, elle m’a envoyé une carte avec une photo d’elle et d’un homme barbu. Au dos, elle a écrit : S’il te plaît, viens. Personne ne dira rien. C’est promis.

My sister Katrin is getting married on Saturday. Three months ago she sent me a card with a photo of her and a man with a beard. On the back she wrote: Please come. Nobody will say anything. I promise.

Personne ne dira rien. J’ai lu cette phrase cent fois, au bureau à Hambourg, dans le métro, la nuit dans mon lit. Elle avait l’air d’une consolation. Maintenant, dans la voiture à côté d’oncle Sepp, elle ressemblait à une menace.

Nobody will say anything. I had read that sentence a hundred times, in the office in Hamburg, on the underground, in bed at night. It had sounded like comfort. Now, in the car next to Uncle Sepp, it sounded like a threat.

Nous avons traversé le village. Oncle Sepp a monté le son de la radio, exactement au moment où nous sommes passés devant l’église. J’ai su pourquoi.

We drove through the village. Uncle Sepp turned the radio up at exactly the moment we drove past the church. I knew why.

Il y a dix ans, je devais me marier dans cette église. Les invités sont arrivés, la musique a joué, Tobias a attendu devant l’autel. Et moi, je suis montée dans un taxi et je suis allée à la gare, en robe blanche.

Ten years ago I was supposed to get married in that church. The guests came, the music played, Tobias waited at the altar. And I got into a taxi and went to the station, in my white dress.

Depuis ce jour-là, personne dans ma famille ne m’a parlé de cette journée. Ni au téléphone, ni dans des lettres. Pas même quand mon père est mort.

Since then, nobody in my family has talked to me about that day. Not on the phone, not in letters. Not even when my father died.

Devant la maison de ma mère, oncle Sepp a coupé le moteur. Il a regardé le volant pendant un long moment.

In front of my mother’s house Uncle Sepp switched off the engine. He looked at the steering wheel for a long time.

« Il y a une chose que tu dois savoir », a-t-il dit ensuite. « Tobias joue samedi dans la fanfare. De la trompette. Katrin ne pouvait pas ne pas l’inviter. »

“There’s one thing you need to know,” he said then. “Tobias is playing in the village band on Saturday. Trumpet. Katrin couldn’t uninvite him.”

Puis il est descendu, et je suis restée assise seule dans la voiture, le cœur battant.

Then he got out, and I sat alone in the car, my heart pounding.
